So, are the beaches closed from driving on? Last time I checked there was a group trying to close nearly everything on the beaches.
I'm going down in the first week of July and I want to do some on shore fishing with... the Sequoia (Not bringing the Cruiser :frown:)

I think there are restrictions, read this ...

Shooting The Breeze by Irene Nolan

I think that will answer the question ...

I'm a part of Mid Atlantic Toyota Land Cruiser Association, and we would be very interested in a trip down there, maybe to Corolla though, or farther south ...

Let us know ...

There are diffently restrictions, lots of restrictions! You'll have to do some research as to the new maps. I haven't been able to find any new revised ones, especially since they widened the restricted areas 50' due to someone vandalizing the protected areas. Good luck, as it's not going to be what you are used to....

:crybaby:

Thanks for the info guys! The maps illustrate what the nesting grounds are, I figure when we get down there we'll judge it by where the other cars are parked on the beach. My sister's FJ Cruiser might come down so we could have some fun on the sand, but most likely its going to be the Sequoia as far as it goes for real 4x4. Which isn't all that bad, they're pretty capable actually.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for mud stickers when I go down. Look for a gray sequoia with a surf board on top, fishing rods and a white trailer. ;-) .. On its way to Buxton.

The National Park Service posts updated closure maps for Cape Hatteras/Ocracoke every Thursday.
Night driving is banned throughout. Moving closures depending on pre-nesting, nesting, and other activity for terns, plovers, and turtles.

Irene Nolan's webpaper for the Hatteras/Ocracoke area. She posts updates as well.

When we went to ocracoke Memorial Day weekend, the south point and cape point of hatteras were effectively shut down. The south point of ocracoke was also shut totally down. There were sporadic closures on the beach from the Ocracoke north ferry dock to the village. At that time, you could still drive to the north point of the island, but there were nesting closure areas that you would come close to violating at high tide.

I was down at OBX last weekend and pretty much everything was open from Avon south to Frisco. There were a few places with no through access due to closures. Cool deal that NPS posts updated closures every week.
