Maybe take a look at your EGR passages and valve? Cleaning those could give you a little better result.

My dad's 94 4Runner failed a Utah emissions test for the same reason. We just did a quick swap on all the ignition stuff (Cap, rotor, wires, plugs) and cleaned the airflow sensor and she passed the next day. YMMV though.

Would I be better off keeping it as a parts truck and maybe parting it out?

1996 and in Northern Utah

Well, title says it all. I'm looking to sell my 80. It has a pretty serious lower end knock, and every resource I've read says that it will be needing a full engine rebuild. Where should I start with the price? I wish I could part it out, But I don't have the garage space or the time to tear it...

I've been searching for a few hours to no avail. It seems like nobody is producing interior tire mounts anymore. Does anyone have a schematic or a write up on how to do one myself? I've seen ratchet straps, but I'd prefer to not have a 315 smack the back of my head in the event of a crash, lol.

It smooths out a bit when it warms up, but it doesn't disappear completely.

Mine has had a similar knock for a while. The mechanic that listened to it told me that it doesn't sound like rod knock, but probably a valve issue. I just fixed my exhaust leaks and it didn't get rid of the sound, so I think there is some possibility that it's a valve issue. I'll be getting a...
