As some of you know I’ve been helping Hema Maps for the last couple of years with their North American Explorer App (Hema Explorer North America - Hema Maps)
Last year we planned & executed an epic 6,500 mile expedition from the Mexican border to Prudhoe Bay, AK along the Continental Divide...
FYI, DeLorme released their Earthmate app for anyone to use at $29.99/year, before you had to have an InReach device:
Earthmate for Mobile Outdoor Annual Subscription - DeLorme
Also, Alltrails.com updated their app yesterday in a very big way...
Off course offline maps...no point in doing an app without that :)
I like having that level of detail in the POIs. Would take the community to keep it updated and valid though =)
I think I'm going to start a newsletter to talk about navigation in the backcountry, would that type of info be of...
George_tlc has a pretty good wish list here:

But..if you could wave a magic wand and build the perfect app for exploring, what features would it have?
Map types?
USGS Topo
Satellite
Streets
USFS/BLM Motor...
Gaia is a good option but their data isn't perfect for 4x4 users. Downloading maps is easy enough, and they do allow you to import gpx & kml if you pre-build them prior to your trip.
Plenty of great info in here...I agree the perfect solution will likely never exist. I think if you find a good on-road (i.e. in cell service app) such as Tom Tom or Garmin apps, then find a good exploration app...you'll be good to go. It's easy enough to switch if you need to.
Maybe we'll get...
I watched this episode several times..composed myself...and wrote a lil something:
Did You See the Top Gear Episode with the FJ Cruiser? - Toyota Cruisers & Trucks Magazine | Land Cruiser, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, Toyota Trucks
Was it entertaining? Yes
Was it real life? No
Do they need...
You may have seen Colter running around covering the event for us. Beau is also there doing the Living Overland Cooking classes, and Jonathan is rolling south right now - so look for him tomorrow :)
Here's a few pics from Day 1:

We also did a little article on the first $3k (inspired by the Blue Room thread):

We broke it down by how you'll be using your truck, since we're all different. Just like everyone else ;)
Definitely an LED flood for camp use, for all the reasons already mentioned. You can find inexpensive options, but make sure they have a very good waterproof rating & a good warranty, just in case :)
