P308, changed coil, was okay for a few minutes then...

It is an '01 LX470 with nearly 300K miles. It has seen a lot of hard duty. HARD duty. It turned out to be the plug. Put a new one in and that was that. I'll order a new set of plugs and coils today and just replace the lot of them.

Thanks, 2001LC. I'll put a new plug in tomorrow. If it's not that or the wires, I guess it could be a faulty new coil pack, in which case I'll swap a couple around to see.

I got a 308 code, accompanied as it has been when I got a 30# code in the past, with VST and VSC lights coming on too. I swapped out the ignition coil on the number 8 cylinder (rearmost, passenger side) and the error code went away. Test drove and I get the check engine light and same code...

Smoking oil leak — any ideas? Also seeking mechanic recommendation for southern Vermont

Thank you, makes sense. Does this mean gaskets need to be replaced or could there be a torquing issue somewhere? How big a repair deal is this potentially? I’ve done it on aircraft engines in minutes, but it looks like this might be much less accessible.

Smoking oil leak — any ideas? Also seeking mechanic recommendation for southern Vermont

Greetings, All - The engine on my '01 LX470 with 270K miles is smoking after driving. The attached picture of the suspect area is practically useless, but included because it's as good as I could get with the phone. The area that seems to be where the smoke is originating is beneath the blurred...

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

Okay, thanks — the only parts place near here only has Zerex Geo 5, Zerex Dex and Prestone in stock. Any suggestion about any of these and mixing with God only knows what's in there (if I had to guess I'd say it was red)?

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

Thank you for this answer. SO appreciated. Question — which hose is it I should burp? Where is it? Also, all they have locally in stock is Prestone and Zerex Geo 5 or Zerex Dex. It's NAPA shop, they looked the vehicle up and the specced stuff they don't have....

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

I posted a new thread here about how badly this went here. After replacing the T, letting it idle for about ten minutes, everything seemed okay (temp and fitting), then took it for a test drive. Drive was about two miles, and just before returning I noticed check engine light, VST and ABS...

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

Hi, All — I posted about a coolant tee rupturing after I shut down the '01 LX470 yesterday in this thread. I'm out in the middle of nowhere. Today, I replaced the tee with the only thing available which is roughly the same size, though at 16 mm at all three openings, the bottom one is slightly...

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

Way smarter than I am.... When I bought the spare I looked for a brass one but could only find the plastic one, but it'll have to do. This happening on the day I clocked 250K was kind of funny.

    Yes, definitely due.

I haven't had the engine cover off, but if I recall, doesn't that hose go into the back of the engine and not into the radiator? It's the top tee that failed.

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

I think I have a hook end awl. I could pinch the hose with a vice grip. It's probably original 20-year-old hose. I hope it's not brittle, too. I'll be damn careful.

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME. It is indeed a coolant tee. It looked okay—or at least the way it previously did, with a little pink bleed on the hose, so I neglected that. When I put my hand to it, it separated immediately. Idiotically enough, I had planned on following the advice on here about...

EVEN WORSE: NOT RESOLVED: HELP: What blew up?!

This video isn't worth more than entertainment, if even that, but it'll give you an idea of the bummer that just happened on the day I put the 250,000th mile on this '01 LX470. The good news is that whatever blew didn't blow until after I stopped the car. I had just driven 240 miles towing a...
