ATXFJ40 (on MUD) has a new to him, old to me FJ40. While technically this was a run, I'm posting it up in this thread as it will be light on trail details. The trail was in good shape and the run was fun. There, trail run stuff is out of the way. :D
ATXFJ40 had a flexible schedule for...
Much will depend on what bracket you are using. Posts 4 and 5 of this thread show how I did this in a F engine using a smog pump bracket. I have since replaced the F engine with a rebuilt F.5 engine and everything moved over just fine.
I’m listing this soon-to-be-yours 1971 Land Cruiser FJ40 for $9,000. You got questions, PM me. The FJ40 is in Centennial CO, a southern suburb of Denver.
Depending upon the weather and your mood, this FJ40 has an extensive wardrobe selection that is guaranteed to be a conversation starter...
I have a 71 and my start up process is:
Pull the choke knob out - how far depends upon how cold it is
Pump the gas pedal twice
Turn the key
If the engine is already warm, I can turn it right over and it starts right up.
I used a ratcheting strap wrapped around the grooves and anchored it to the frame to keep the pulley from moving. In the junk yard a breaker bar and pipe for leverage worked to remove the nut. In the garage the air impact wrench made quick work of removing that nut.
Yes, all the accessories (air cleaner, carb, manifolds, alternator, fuel pump, senders, water pump, starter) will move over. I switched out a F with the F.5 and moved the accessories (everything but the exhaust manifold) over just fine. I did make the move to a header as part of the switch...
Is the the same distributor that was in the engine prior to the rebuild? Was the distributor mounting block removed as part of the rebuild?
A while back I swapped in a new to me engine that had a mis-match distributor mounting block. When I installed a big cap dizzy, I would have to force...
Yes, I am very happy with it. :D
1. Vinyl. Looking through old posts, Nuclearlemon had this top in 2004. The vinyl has held up well through the years.
2. Hard top in the winter. Soft top is on April/May through September/October.
3. No theft issues, but I'm not often parked where this might...
Someone already mentioned the need to remove the rings/felt. I believe you will also need to remove the cap at the bottom of the knuckle. The caps have a stud that seats inside the trunion bearings.
Removing the caps may be a "trouble spot" approaching the work the way you propose. The...
1971 was 42 years ago. The truck has been sitting for 27. The compression is low one of the cylinders.
A compression test (dry/wet) and leak down test will give you an indication of what you are likely going to encounter. You did not mention if a leak down test had been done. If I were in...
I experienced a similar failure and fortunately did not hit anything. I limped home with low gears and emergency brake. My failure component was a passenger front brake cylinder. It was an opportune time to convert to disc brakes up front. If you brake fluid is low in the master, a line or...
The above posts are spot on if you have the original exhaust manifold, which would be consistent with stock "F" engine. If you have a header the question then becomes do you have a heat riser.
Either way, I have found that a bit of choke helps smooth things out on acceleration until the...
