Reliable FJ40 Mechanic - Western Slope Colorado

First, my thanks to everyone on ih8mud. You are a great community and always very helpful. I am starting to reach the age where some jobs are just too big for me or I no longer have the tools and space to do the work. My long-time "go-to" mechanic was older than me and sold his shop a few...

    Speedometer Trouble - FJ40

I really appreciate your help. The cluster is original. It has never been touched. That is why I am disappointed that the speedo broke. Is it possible to fix the speedometer or get it repaired by someone with the knowledge like you have? My FJ40 is an 8/68 - model year 1969. I am going to...

    Speedometer Trouble - FJ40

Thanks @devo and Jack! You are correct Jack. Before I could get the speedometer cable disconnected, the needle spun off of the speedometer. It is now laying between the glass and the speedometer plate. I cannot tell if it is broken or spun off. There is a shaft on the needle. I will take...

    Speedometer Trouble - FJ40

Looking for expert help. I have never had this issue before. My ‘69 FJ40 spends winter in a heated garage except for the few sunny days without winter crud on the streets. Started it up yesterday after a two month rest and the speedometer was registering 50 mph when I was going 25 and the...

    Builds 1969 FJ40 Father / Son Build

Royal Cake, restoration is looking great! I love that you choose an original 1969 color (happens to be same color as my original owner 8/68 FJ40). I cannot help you with the two fasteners where the curve of the rear windows begin yet only one on your gasket. I have never taken my roof off...

    Builds 1969 FJ40 Father / Son Build

Nice job! Be sure to attach the two drain hoses before you install the heater box and blower motor. Leave some excess length on the drain hoses and cut to final length after everything is installed in and under the dash. Lesson learned the hard way!

    Paint questions

My paint shop matched mine. When I was getting my '69 FJ40 repainted, I saw that Cool Cruisers had some not in spray cans. Here is the link to theirs -- https://www.coolcruisers.com/painsilpew.html

Clusters, Gauges, Speedo & Odo meters

Thanks! Please let me know any more tips you learn as you reassemble and reinstall the cluster. When you reattach the cable to the speedometer, it is very tempting to put the cluster in place and pull it forward for easy access, but I learned that you need to install the cluster and tighten...

Clusters, Gauges, Speedo & Odo meters

Great Thread -- my thanks to all who resurrected it! I was so pleased when a new speedo cable fixed my '69 FJ40's speedometer and odometer. Then, after about 45 miles, the odometer stopped working while the speedometer continues to work fine. I dread pulling the instrument cluster again since...

FJ40 Seat upgrades, where to begin?

As others have posted, you do not have original seats. You might want to check some frame and engine numbers to verify that you have a 1969 FJ40. The OEM transmission is a 3 on a tree and the upper/lower transfer case is controlled by a level under the dash (right side of steering wheel)...

    Toyota Tools

Johnny C -- nice work on the history of the FJ tool rolls. As you suggested, below is a post I made several years ago. My 1969 FJ40 has been in the family since my dad drove it off the Toyota showroom floor. I thought the FJ historians on this forum might like a photo of the "Content" list that...

Vintage TOYOTA MOTOR Hand Tools and "TEQ" Accessories

I posted the following back in 2020 but after reading this thread, I thought it might fit better here for those interested in Toyota tools: My 1969 FJ40 has been in the family since my dad drove it off the Toyota showroom floor. I thought the FJ historians on this forum might like a photo of the...
