I like that idea, I'm currently trying to figure how to do that with my HFS extended shackles.....any examples?
I installed the Bestop Trailmax and its worked well for me. Fairly comfortable for big people, anchors a child seat well, and folds up out of the way when not needed. I through bolted mine to the bed and used 3/16" plate steel reinforcing plates for the bolts.

I had the exact same problem too. Turns out there was a crack in the intake manifold bottom where the heat riser plate thingy used to be. Sealed it with jb weld and looks good 6 years later....
That seems pretty expensive even for a super cherry restored 40. If you do swap be prepared for a big downgrade in creature comforts and road manners. That being said there aint nothin' much cooler than a nice restored fj 40. When I drive my 78 around people are always checking it out and asking...
Thanks for the write up! So if your VR died in the middle of nowhere could you wire the F terminal on your alternator to battery voltage to make it home? Would you have to cycle the connection on and off to prevent over charging?
