    Vibration - where to look

Turned out not to be the tires being out of balance. Instead, it was the front drive shaft needing to be rebuilt. Everything is humming right along now. At least it wasn't something major.

    Vibration - where to look

One can only hope it is something as simple as an unbalanced tire or u-joint that needs lubing. Any other thoughts? Rear-end, tranny or transfer case? it is seriously more noticable sitting in the back than the front. Which is probably why he thought it was no big deal. Of course, at 21...

    Vibration - where to look

There were lubed approx. 5,000 miles ago. Of course, I didn't do it myself. So I am just going by what he requested they do and what they say they did. How many miles are u-joints generally good for before they need to be replaced?

    Vibration - where to look

I was visiting my son at the Air Force Academy this past weekend. Last year I took him our 93 LC which now has about 260,000 miles on it. While driving with him and my wife, I was sitting in the back seat and felt a very strong vibration. Definately not as noticable while sitting in the...

    Preparing for cross country trek

what needs to be done to determine the exact problem? I hate to take it somewhere to have them tear it down just to find out it wasn't needed? Also, if they put in the wrong kind of grease in the knuckle (say a lighter weight or lithium vs. Moly) would that cause it to weep from the wiper...

    Preparing for cross country trek

So after a lot of work, even more money and 2 days of driving, the LC is now in it's new home at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Many thanks to all those that offered advice and information and especially to CDAN who saved me tons on all the many, many parts I needed. There...

    Diff Breather Leak

maybe I just overfilled then. Since what I read was to fill it until it was just below the fill hole, I just kept pumping it in until it started to dribble back out the hole. I am quite sure I put in all of 3 quarts.

    Diff Breather Leak

I have a leak very similar to what is shown in the pictures in this thread. Not leaking enough to actually drip to the floor, but I notice that after driving, it is enough to be spraying the undercarriage. I just put new oil in the differential 800 miles ago. I tried to be careful not to...

RTH - Head Gasket complete - AC compressor won't work

So, my mechanic finished my head gasket and timing chain slipper and called me to pick up my truck. When I got there, he says "I assume the AC wasn't working when you brought it in". Uh, no it was working just fine, thank you. So, now I am running short of time and trying to help him out...

    ? on HG replacement

Well, you all make good points. I am not sure I was perfectly clear in my first post. The new HG from the kit I purchased from Cdan was being installed at the time the bolts went bad. The real question is. Can I just back out the bad bolts and replace them one at a time with new? If...

    ? on HG replacement

So, I got a call last friday from the mechanic working on my timing chain slipper & HG. He said when he was tightening the HG bolts that 3 of them went "soft". He gave me some options. 1. leave them as it stands now, he thinks there is only a very small chance of failure 2. get all new...

muffler bolts - no more surprises

one more question. I realized i should have bought a new exhaust tail pipe cushion, but didn't. I am going to order one. Will I be able to slide that in without unbolting everything? The old one split in half when i cut the pipe and the muffler fell to the ground.

muffler bolts - no more surprises

yeah Guden-tite is about right. After I went back out to tighten them up, I realized there was no way i was getting my torque wrench in there anyway. Well all done. Seems to have eliminated my whistle too. But maybe that is more in my head and I just wanted to benefit more from it than...
