Turned out that my glow plugs had failed due to the ones fitted to my car a couple of years ago being the wrong type (12V ones, my car is 24V). So fitted so NGK Y-197R and these seem to have solved the issue!

I have actually read somewhere that, putting the slight improvement in mpg aside, it was actually better to leave the hubs locked all the time to keep the mechanics oiled. Would be interesting to know what most people do. Nick.
