it's not the air intake tube or air filter. I cleaned the battery terminals, it not that. The fuses all look good.

I finally bought an fzj80! It has the leather interior, and it's got some stiffness issues. Another one I looked at and didn't buy had it much worse. I can't find anything with the search about this, and I assume this is a common problem. What do you do when your leather goes all stiff and horrible?
I think I'm deciding against buying the one I looked at.
There are in fact, plenty of 80's available for reasonable prices and in reasonable shape. The one at the consignment place was a little beat (but it does have lockers...)
