For strictly on road, how would you build a 40?

I've driven my 78 40 back and forth to San Francisco from Santa Cruz for work a few times. 85 miles each way. It takes about full tank of gas to do the round trip. It turns what is normally a 1.5 hour trek each way into a loud, tough 2-2.25 hour grueling slog. I get thumbs up all over the place...

    Use 2 Intake/Exhaust Gaskets on 78 FJ40?

I'm going to check the torque on the manifold bolts today, it's a drag though, looks like I need to pull the carb off again to get access to the top bolts. There's a heat sheild attached to a EGR insulator plate that prevents me from getting the socket on the bolts. Bummer. Oh well...

Newbie question on painting fj 40 tops

I'm with Drew on this. In design terms there's what's called the "form vocabulary". Referring to cars and trucks, form vocabulary would be the various design elemnts that stick with the manufacturer's designs from year to year. BMW for insatnce, uses the split kidney grill design. They've...

    Use 2 Intake/Exhaust Gaskets on 78 FJ40?

Thanks for the feedback- I'm using an un-planed stock exhaust manifold. I went with two. It's done. The 40 has never run better. Also replaced the riser gaskets and the stainless baffle between the intake and exhaust. Huge source of exhaust leak with the old cracked gaskets and baffle... Now at...

    Use 2 Intake/Exhaust Gaskets on 78 FJ40?

I'm re-doing up my 78 FJ40's intake/exhaust gasket this morning to fix leaks and a burned gasket, along with a general emissions tune-up so I can pass CA smog tests. Is the smart set-up when using stock intake and exhaust manifolds to run two I/E gaskets? What torque do you use with the two...

    My 78 Fj40- a few images

Probably not going to bring the short bus back out to burningman; a word to the wise- the alkali out there took years (no kidding on that) to get rid of, and it caused scale/rust to form almost everywhere. Prior to bringing it onto the playa, I had lots of rust free shiny steel spots from years...

little bit of beverly hillbillies as well :D .... bottomline- if I can do it, anyone with enough dedication can transform their FJ into something to be proud of.

    My 78 Fj40- a few images

I did the respray with a Devilbiss HVLP gun, in the driveway, under a large tent. Did the prep, bodywork, shot the primer and final color. Spraying the spare tire carrier was a bear, as well as the big white roof panel. The web link in the first post shows some of the detail steps. Paint and...

    Welding tips for stainless???

I've done a fair amount of MIG welding on thinnish gauge stainless with minimal issues. It welds nicely. As for warping, I haven't had any significant issues. Do you have any stock to experiment on? It does seem to melt a bit faster than mild steel. Why Argon? I've used tri-mix. It may be...

Got it. Didn't have television reception in the desert in 96, missed the commercial. As for the evil penguins, I think they got that idea from this scenario. :D
