The backlash is caused from worn diffs, including t/c centre diff and slip yokes, It won't break on you just piss you off, sounds like every1 just put up with it

Yeah mate sometime the rubber mounts harden up and crack, I had a patrol with broken gearbox mount, use to vibrate like that

Have you checked your gearbox mounts/ engine mounts?

As any 1 had this problem with there 80s? Did you fix it was it worth it?

Yeah I done a full tune up 2 months ago. Shouldn't need another yet surely, pinging usually happen under load, my rattle is between idle (800rpm-1500rpm in neutral, I haven't heard it while driving. You are right in saying its 16 yo rig, it's just giving me the s*** as I fix 1 thing and another...

I will upload a video as soon as I get a chance, it doesn't sound like a bearing, i have done bearings on my GTR and my old 4runner, this time its a engine rattle rather a knock knock, and it doesnt increase in speed with revs or get louder, I think I'll just thrash it till it dies and address...

Thanks for the reply stevesnj, could worn tappets really sound a diesel? I thought tappets is more of a tick tick sound rather than a rattle, I will check the shim clearances tomorrow, worth a try! Also why would distributer cause that that sort of sound? I hope that's all it is, I was thinking...

I have pulled all the belts off and it is still there so I have ruled that out, Its almost sounds like diesel! Does any one no why a petrol cruiser could sound like a diesel??

The rattle is coming from the front of engine around the timing chain cover, it doesn't do it when it cold, I thought maybe timing chain by why doesn't it rattle when cold or high revs?

Hi I have a 94 80 series it has started to make a strange rattle after it has warmed up and when idling it goes away when I rev past 1500rpm, I have seen a couple of post online with the same problem only no one has an answer. HELP!!
