Hoping somebody can answer this now... 2.5 years later. Facing same issue on my 1980 BJ40 with 24V alternator and bad stator. Cannot find a decent replacement.

Thanks for the info 1980 was driving with it on. Wife forgot it on… hopefully dropping driveshaft isn’t too bad.
