Got started on some new brake lines. I should've waited a bit though, at least the hoses will have to come back off in a couple days for cutting off the spring plates, and then maybe again for welding on new ones. The clamps are the wrong way around on purpose to keep the line more protected...
Made the first piece of underbody protection today, a front diff guard from some 16 or 18mm rebar. I will also make a tie rod guard from 100x50x7 u-section on the front axle as well as new brake lines before mounting it to the new frame. Unsprung weight? Never heard of it..
That's the best you can do unless you have access to acid dipping and paint dipping or galvanising, to get the inside painted. I was planning to get my frame painted with epoxy primer on the outside and sprayed with oil on the inside, but I found a galvanising place that's cheaper.
Almost months of saltwater (I took them out a couple days ago) hasn't been as bad as I had hoped for. The tar seems to have dried out a bit though, on the bare metal piece it's even flaking at the edge.
Once I get my sheep sheared I'll try mixing wool fat, tar and oil for hopefully the...
Got the rear axle and one shock mounted, which allowed me to check the suspension travel. Here's on the "bump stops" (about 1cm over full compression of the shock):
Normal ride height, or at least pretty close:
And at full extension of the shock:
I then got the old frame moved off the front...
Did you get it off yet? The filter is hexagonal or octagonal at the bottom, you can get a socket that fits it from autopart stores I believe and easily get it loose with a socket wrench and long extension from underneath.
I got the front axle and steering box off the old frame. I haven't quite figured out how to get it out of the garage though, there's half a frame with an engine and gearbox very much in the way.
I made a 33x10.5 cardboard wheel for testing purposes.
After a couple weeks of way too hot weather to do anything other than sit still, preferably in a basement or an air conditioned car, I've been back on working on the cruiser this week.
First, the new action plan. Instead of making it completely done before inspection and then driving until...
There was a BJ75 with a PTO powered compressor for sale on Nettiauto a while ago. Not quite a York though, the compressor and air tank took up the entire bed. I believe it was used for sandblasting or spray painting at construction sites. You can get large compressor blocks quite cheaply from...
Makes sense, though 90cm doesn't allow for a very big tree. Is it useful in the modern world of various straps and shackles, or is it just coolness points?
