    FJ40 Braking Problem

Pliers? Not a chance. Those cylinder adjusters wouldn't budge a single click, even with a pair of Channel Locks. Unfortunately the only work space I've got is my driveway (no work bench, no air tools and no vise) :crybaby: The toothed wheel on one side is all buggered up, so I'm not feeling...

    FJ40 Braking Problem

After two evenings of wrenching between getting home from work and dinner time, the rear brake shoe installation is only 1/2 done. The first hurdle was dealing with the shoes and springs. I think I'm a pro at this point. That stuck drum that I thought was going to be a pain was off...

    FJ40 Braking Problem

Thanks Subzali, Spotcruiser, Poser and the rest of the gang for your suggestions and insight. Still being a rookie FJ owner, this forum beats any other web group or repair manual I've yet seen. :) GOOD TIMES :) The only hammers I've got in the garage are a 1lb plastic dead blow mallet...

    FJ40 Braking Problem

Jacked up the rear end last night and spun the wheels. Both sounded normal, so off they came for closer look at the brakes. According to the Haynes manual, there should have been brake drum retaining screws. There weren't any to be found on either drum, just two holes in between the mouning...

    Wanted FJ60 Manual

No hardware whatsoever. When I purchased the LC there was one of those long, multi-panel "Wink" mirrors mounted where the visors should have been. At least the old OEM mirror was found in a box of spares!

    FJ40 Braking Problem

Thanks Poser. My buddy who sold me the FJ just said it could have been a rear brake drum cracking. He had a similar issue with his 1954 Chevy Stepside.

    FJ40 Braking Problem

Something went terribly "hinky" with the Cruiser's brakes the other night while driving in town. Pulling away from a stop I heard something clank, like a rock hitting up against the undercarriage. At first I thought that's all it was. I'm sure those knobbie tires threw up a piece of road debris...

What year is my 40 ?

On the possitive side of that coin, it looks like they offer financial assistance for smog repair :) http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/stdPage.asp?Body=/geninfo/factsheets/Consumer_Assistance_Program.htm

What year is my 40 ?

The DMV representative that fixed me up with the 45 Day Permit seems to be content with the written statement of facts I provided. All he requests now just the smog cert to finish up the deal and give me my reg. stickers. Willing to negotiate a trade of goods and/or favors for one smog cert. :D

What year is my 40 ?

Where did you get this information? When I checked the CA DMV website 2 weeks ago it stated smog certs were only required back to the 30 year mark, formerly 25 years. All paperwork from the original sale was lost 10 years ago. The only thing that was left was a photocopy of a Colorado Title...

What year is my 40 ?

In addition to the 12/78 stamped plate, perhaps the 78 / NONCATALYST decal under the hood could sway the DMV, however I don't have a clue what I'd say to the DMV inspector when he looks under the hood at the Holley Carb and bolted air injectors  Maybe emissions aren't his forte? ;)

What year is my 40 ?

I've been using Gromit as my username, email, club nickname and pet's name since the early 1990's. Huge Wallace & Gromit fan and the name was rather appropriate when I took up surfing 2 years ago.
