I have the top schematic. Mine does not have the retaining clips and I didn’t have the bottom schematic. That clears up how it should be and now to finish up the rebuild of the brake system
I know the front spring is suppose to be behind the shoes and the back spring in front but why? I have not seen this on other cars with drum brakes. Just curious.

Removed the fender to facilitate installing rebuilt steering box. I knew the PO didn’t disassemble to paint but wasn’t expecting this. And now I can clearly see the brake master is leaking. More of the same.
Probably correct. The frame number (70310) should be the third week in June of ‘69. Haven’t been able to find a kit for that build period. If anyone knows a source please let me know.

I know a lot of this does not have direct involvement with steering wheel play, however, I still have 1 3/4”...
Fired up my 30yr old HF sand blaster to cleanup the bezel and removed two coats of rubberized undercoat and one coat of flat black paint. Plug welded two license plate holes. Now to cleanup and paint.
Need to restore top on '69FJ40. PO installed new headliner with no regard to weatherstrip condition or rust. I used 6mil plastic and golf tees to protect the headliner.
Treated the rust and replaced a few rivets. Test fitting weatherstrip over tees worked well and helped identify a few holes...
