Trailered Otis the ’76 FJ40 home to Utah on Saturday after a smooth purchase in Steamboat Springs, CO. On Sunday I had to introduce him to the Utah mountains.
Great color. These rigs are equal parts frustration and fun. Most issues are so simple they make you laugh at yourself once you get past the frustration and figure them out. Mine recently left me stranded in the driveway and after I pulled and...
Once things settle down a bit I’ll get a build thread going for Otis, but I wanted to close out this thread with a big THANK YOU to everyone that had suggestions, linked to listings, brought up things I should think about, commented, liked, and...
That comes next 🤪. I'm sure there will be plenty to do, but I did take a quick spin around the neighborhood after I got it unloaded off the trailer and it does seem to run well so far.
Here it is snug in the shop
Quick update: the deal is done and Otis the 1976 FJ40 is on my trailer. Staying the night here in CO, then back to UT in the morning. Very happy with this one, not perfect but sound.
Shout out to @Phrog for the smooth deal and for taking good...
Here’s a little teaser. Floorboards will need some attention at some point and the quarters were patched in the past and may also need a little love, but it seems to be a very solid and continually maintained truck.
If anyone is interested in that ’71, here’s a link to the report from LemonSquad and the pics the seller sent me:

A few updates. While I was waiting for the inspection on the ’71 to get done I took the advice of some folks here and was able to drive a local ’71 with the 3-speed, to get a sense of if I really was OK with that setup. As it turns out, I wasn’t...
Just finished reading through this whole thread while I’m waiting to have my wife’s Kia serviced. Exceptional work!
Big congrats on the new family member!
It is the first one I’ve looked at that really caught me. Just seems honest, though with a little too much chrome bling for me long term. :D
I’m pretty sure the person the seller bought it from is the one that blinged it up. If I do buy it I’ll...
Update. I have an inspection scheduled for the ’71 up near Seattle on Sunday. This is the one I’ve been looking at for a while and have a small deposit on to hold for the inspection. Have a good feeling on this one, even though an earlier truck...
I did reach out to him about the olive one on the site. Ultimately decided it wasn’t the one for me, though I am keeping an eye on his site to see what comes up.
Nice work on the drawer/platform system. I’ll be curious how it works for you and what changes you may make. I’m on the hunt for another 40 right now, and camping with it is my #1 goal. You’ve given me some ideas.
One other tip for Home Depot... the damage discount is good for not just lumber...
I once got this Husky ball-bearing tool chest for $50 because it had a dent in the top. I saw it sitting in the back of the store, and I asked the manager about...
The other reason I use the eucaboard is that the tub bolts stick up and would be in the way of the drawers sliding in and out, so the board helps raise the floor just enough to fix that problem. I used a rubber mallet and a board to smack the...
Thanks, I’ll take a look.
I feel you! I’ve earned my wisdom the honest way, by making all sorts of expensive mistakes. Get enough mistakes under the belt and even this old dog can learn a little. :bang: :D
None of the decisions around these old...
