Any tips on cleaning the heater core?

My cruiser is having trouble with the front heaters warming up, a buddy recommended flushing out the heater core with a garden hose... is this a proper way to do it? I read that people also use vinegar and other chemicals. Has anyone done this or care to explain the process?
