Picked up the seats for my '78 from the upholstery shop. They turned out great!!
I used the $OR cover kit with new foams. All brackets were powdered gloss black and new Overland Metric hardware throughout. The headrest trims are new 3D printed...
I finally finished mounting the lights to the rack last night. Took me a while as I had to fab/modify the brackets to achieve good roof clearance. I'm also mounting a set of 3” lights to the back of the rack, facing toward the rear. Will do...
Well it’s been a wonderful year exploring Colombia with the FJ43 and wouldn’t you know it was time for my annual inspection. So being the pro-active guy that I am, I took the Land Cruiser over to my mechanic for a pre inspection...
Got the transmission clutch and 3 on the tree linkage all installed. The transmission was a bear and my body was very sore the next day from moving it around while on the hoist.
Lots of work on Zippy the 40 (Jessica's truck). Engine out for a new clutch, so add on new distributor, starter, alternator, reseal, valve guides. New parts from Valley Hybrids-- axle kit, double seal output bearing housing, new lines and all...
More progress today. The list is getting shorter

- filled trans and transfer case
- tuned carb
- installed the last shock and rear shock hardware
- fixed the choke cable
- installed and checked all...
Got the 5.3 and transmission / transfer case back together finally. Unfortunately I put it together behind the frame with the lift facing the wrong way ….
Oh wait. Never mind. Fixed it.
Had to remove the rear crossmember. I knew it was going...
I made a Fuel Cut Off Switch Lock that works great. It prevents the switch from being deployed. “Popping the clutch” to start the engine will not work.
I also installed a camera in the back of the 40 facing frontward. It’s visible to anyone that...
@clrussell that’s not a bad idea to have a sniper area. @thecrazygreek has a nicely detailed series of posts as do a few others …..on you tube, check out project wrong way and lone wolf works. They are equally informative and entertaining...
I attached the Samout awning to the rack this afternoon. This thing is awesome. When deployed it’s 6.5’x10’ and easy to set-up. It’s gonna get a lot of use.!!
Big progress day today. I’ll hit the highlights
- finished up seat recoverings and installed
- bled front brakes and master cyl (capped rear because I don’t have the right flex line) my 9 year old ram the pedal for me. His first time bleeding...
Wheel alignment check…
Push pin method:
Started with two pins 14” off the ground at the back of both front wheels.
Drove forward 1/2 a revolution so the pins were 14” off the ground again.
By my eye +/- 3mm.
Given that since the 40 was last on...
I started installing a Front Runner SlimLine II roof rack last night. Finished the job at 1am.
I bought a full perimeter rail kit for the rack so I have many options on rail configuration.
A few shots taken earlier..
