Soo I didn't wanna pay the money just yet to rebuild this motor soooooo. I found this gem with 80 k on it. I pulled the head before I made any rash decisions on buying it and it had perfect cross hatching in all 6 cylinders. It just needs a reseal and its ready to rock!! Oh yeah and I only paid 600 for it

Well I got my shackle hangers set and welded in with all the weight on the cruiser. I'm super pleased with how it all turned out!

Also got the shocks set up and welded in and it sitting on all its own weight. The cruiser actually sits lower then it did before and I love it! Totally please with everything and it makes me even more excited to get it done completely. I also got the bad motor all put back together and wrapped it up last night (its the one in the engine bay right now) so the next step is steering diff armor and then finish the engine bay and get the motor resealed and bolted in

Its been awhile since updating this. I recently got laid off and was in a scramble to start making money. Finally got some play funds built up so I got the engine bay painted. Valve covers and intake painted. Seal kit shows up tomorrow and the head I brought to the machinist

So I got the head down there and me and him started tearing it apart with cleaning and what not and it had 6 burned valve to begin with. Well after all the cleaning we found 4 cracks from the injector hole down into the seat for the intake valve. All in the same spots in 4 cylinder areas. So I ran home and pulled my other 12 valve head and brought it down to find this one had 6 cracks in all 6 cylinder areas all in the same spots as the other head. He looked it up and I guess this is a common problem for these and 4bts. So my next thing is to buy a new head for 400 bucks. Any ideas???

Were these intercooled 1st gen ve pump motors? The non intercooled had problems with cracking like that...
The difference being the size of the injectors. The earlier motors had 9mm injector nozzles, which made the casting between the intake/exhaust valve openings thinner, which propogated cracking. Cummins moved to 7mm nozzles on their injectors later on to combat this.

I see all the new heads are 7mm like you were just talking about. I had no idea that's why they were cracking. So the 7mm head will work on my motor I take it? Just need new injectors and possibly new lines?
