FJ Cruisers on the Rubicon – Rubithon!

June 18th - 23rd

Metal-tech 4x4 was asked to guide in a special group of FJ Cruisers for the 25th anniversary of the TLCA Rubithon event. We have jumped on it and are honored to do so. The FJC’s will be going in early at 9AM from Loon Lake. We will be in two groups of 5, plus a lead truck. By going in on Tuesday we will be able to take our time getting back to the springs.

In order to keep things moving and that all the trucks are running the same lines we are requiring all the trucks have 34” or 35” tires. This is the one and only main requirement.

Strongly Suggested:
Skid plates, Sliders

Suggested:
Front bumper, rear bumper

The Rubicon trail is a 100% pack it out trail, this includes human waste. There are pit toilets in the springs but the rest of the time on the trail it’s a bag. This is why when you see photos of trucks on the Rubicon, they usually have a trash bag OUTSIDE of their truck.

We will also use this thread as a discussion leading up to the run as well.

Holding this spot for an announcement, once we have it cleared we can share it. (Good stuff!)

I'm coming, in my 80 but I'll be there...

I'm still bummed from we got snowed-out two years ago Jerry. Can't do it now because my 93-yesar-old dad is living with us. Have fun and take some good pictures for the rest of us.

I have ran the Con several times in my 80, they do great on that trail set up right. You can register in with the main groups. The Trail committee decided to keep it open for FJC's with us running together as a pack. This is also why we are going in so early and just taking our time back to the springs.

Sounds like it will be an awesome trip!

Billybongo reporting for duty!

Registered, paid, Working on a paid entry for Cruisin' the Woods 2013 and Cascade Cruisers T-shirt for raffle swag. Also plan on stopping at the "Pelican Pub" for a case of some world renowned NW micro brews.

Trail extras- I will have a tie rod, half shaft, boot kit, serpentine belt and misc nuts and bolts.

Thanks Mark and MT Crew!

Once we found out Metal Tech was leading this run... We signed up. We plan on getting lots of video of the FJ Cruisers and having Hula Betty put together a best of FJC video as well as develop a few short films around the Rubicon experience... Folks who run with the FJCs will probably be in the videos if they want.

Here is an oldie but goodie of Nick on the Rubicon when we went a few years back with Metal Tech... It shows what a great time we had there back in 2009. We're thrilled to be headed to the Springs again with Mark and LT.

Great video, Paul! Somehow I managed to miss this one, though I thought I had watched all your videos. Thanks for catching me up, lol.

Was Nick running the factory ATRAC instead of an actual front locker during that run? Sure looked (and sounded) like it...

This would be a great trip! I'll see who might drive out there with me!

Talking via e-mail about the Rubithon thought I would cut and paste part of it over here for others:

Eric A the committy chair of the Rubithon sent me an e-mail letting me know people have to be TLCA members for the run. I never knew that, but then I have been a TLCA member since 1990.

We will be going in at Loon Lake at 9AM on Tuesday. The plan is to stage at 8AM at the spillway of the dam with the departure at 9. A number of people will probably stay at the Icehouse campground/resort (resort term used loosely) since its only about 10 miles from the lake. Last place with real bathrooms, food and gas.

We are on the Con all the way up to the 23rd. The FJC's get first crack early AM at departure from Rubicon Springs up Cadillac Hill. This is a big thing to get since there are a 100 trucks wanting to leave all on the same day. FJC's are slower going on the trail, but are usually not plagued with the typical old age issues most of the other trucks are. (Steering box rips off frame, blown transfer case etc.) So real early departure up the hill Sunday AM.

ON THE TRAIL:
The main thing is to know human waste can not be left on the trail. Once we are in the springs, they have pit toilets but the rest of the time its some kind of bag system.

We plan on taking our time and using three days to get back to the springs to take it easy on the trucks. We will get in on Thursday afternoon. Once in the springs we all set up camp and are there through Sat night, leaving early Sunday. There is swimming in the springs, killer hiking and of course taking the trucks out and playing on the rocks in the area. Also just hiking out and watching other trucks beat their junk on the rocks is fun. Friday night will be a hugs bon fire and the marauder bar. The marauder bar is a real bar that is set up and they make mixed drinks until they run out of booze. Allot of people will bring a bottle or two and donate them to the bar. Sometimes there will be a breakfast Sat AM, its never really known but some company usually does one. Then Sat night is the big dinner and raffle. Camp chair a must for this one.

Sounds fun almost wish I had a FJ Cruiser instead of a 4Runner. Same platform.

ha ha... yeah this was Nick's pre-locked front end... But most of the noise i remember were the lugs on his 35"s picking the plastic fender liner apart. :)
