Just got my hj60 back from getting new injector tips and the idle feels much faster

In looking at the manual, it says that the 2H with A/C and power steering should have a 2-stage diaphram idle-advance.

I can see a vac line going to what looks to be a VSV then a diaphram. It definitely does *not* kick in when the A/C is engaged. The vsv has 3 ports- two on one side, then one on the other. The line coming out of the one-port side goes to the diaphram. There is only one line attached to the other side.

Anyone know the correct configuration?

Anyone know how the power steering idle-up works?

Any pictures of the correct configuration of the VSV?

I think it would really help out in keeping the cab cooler while idling around ( I spend a lot of time below 1000rpm) but the system is clearly not working right now.

Thanks in advance for any help at all!

I'm not sure what you need .. from my vacc pump I have a single hose that runs over the 2H to the passenger side to compensate the AC .. AC compensator from a AC actuator.

I have nothing in terms of Vac from'to the AC ?!
my only vac goes to the brake booster and clutch booster. what's missing?
thanks,
j

hi,
from what i remember when i installed AC in my 85bj60 way back in time.
disconnect the vacuum line at the dashpot and turn on your AC on and feel if there's suction in the line. if there is, all you need to do is raise your idle screw on the dashpot assembly(950 rpm). maybe there should be a plug on the second nipple? power steering idle-up, never heard of it!

I don't know if the motor ever *had* a p/s idle up or not. Would be curious to know how such a system would work. Personally, I've always just put the clutch in and revved it once or twice if the steering was feeling stiff.

Anyhow, thanks for the diagram from the epc. I think that might help.
One thing for sure: the a/c idle up doesn't seem to do anything at all- I can see the mechanism clearly, but no movement when on/off at any (reasonable) rpm level.

I'll post if I figure it out

Sounds like your power steering pump needs attention.
As for the air con idle up, none of them seem to work here also, although nearly everyone runs aircon in the tropics. Perhaps it would be helpful for people who sit in traffic for extended periods hardly the case over here.

I need to take a pic or two of the way mine is currently set up....
the little control valve (solenoid?) has 2 lines attached, one port free. I suspect that the free port is the problem.

In futzing with it the other day, I did get the advance to work very temporarily. Not sure what happened, but the revs kicked way up for a while till I pulled the vac hose off, then they fell down to normal. Couldn't duplicate the action :(

Will keep fiddling, as A/C at idle is a must- I spend a lot of time puttering about slowly showing real estate, and also leave the truck running while walking around on lots and such- most of my clients are north americans and aren't as accustomed to the heat as I am, so more AC is a good thing.

Thanks

My aircon runs very cold at idle. Perhaps I have the wrong impression but I thought it was to only to bump up the idle speed by a couple of hundred revs while at idle then let it go back to 650 rpm again.Has your truck got an electric fan on the air con condensor, this would help a great deal in this situation. Not much room for this on a HJ75 but in the pipeline. cheers gazza

In the HJ-60 no big diference .. not much space .. ! ( I hate that ) I use an Flex A Lite ejectric fan 14" but I need to modify the central pivol locl support to fit in right side.

You will want to reset the idle according to the FSM after the injector work.
Did your 60 originally have an auto tranny on it? I have only ever seen the PS idle up type pumps on automatic HJ6s. I would assume it is so that when you are in drive with your foot on the brake (not throttle) and turn the wheel, the load of the PS doen't try and stall out the engine.. and probably so there is enough RPMs for the PS pump to turn the wheels.

Have you checked to see if there is a signal getting to the AC idle up solenoid and that the solenoid functions on it's own? If there is that there are no leaks in the vacuum lines? I take it the AC system is charged and that the AC pressure switch is functioning?

The Body/chassis manual and EWDs for the HJ60 might be a real help especially if the problem turns out to be electrical.
