5 Speed(h55f)---Pops Out Of 5th
I know this is a common problem. What is the most common fix next to a full rebuild?

My advise: Find the best deal you can on a new coarse spline H55F out of the US and be done with it
Save yourself the aggravation of trying to replace everything to do with 5th gear in the transmission.

Been through this with the folks old HJ60 ten years ago. After the tranny had been into 3 times by a Cruiser shop... and every part related to 5th was new from Toyota the pop was gone and so was $3500.. Started to pop again in less than 100k km.

I heard something in a past thread about heating a certain part in the trans to bend it a little so it would not pop out?

Tried that. I was just hoping that someone had found the magic cure.

Wow that sucks. Is it due to end play on the shaft? ie. bearing wear?

I had this problem and apparently it usually is a worn selector fork but my gearbox had been rebuilt recently so I did not think/hoped this was not the case.
The shop had a play with it and thought that it felt like the gear was not quite engaging properly so they got inside and bent the selector fork slightly and voila! All good and no problems since.

My advice: go to a good mechanic familiar with the 'box and let them have a drive etc

cheers

Tony at Alltoy in Kamloops knows H55Fs really well and would be my recommendation if you want to go down the repair road. Rob Millson of LCI would the guy to talk to if you are in the valley, but he doesn't wrench cruisers full time anymore so he may not take it on or it will be a while.
may the force be with you.

Wish I could say. At that point we weren't prepared to put anymore $ into the issue, the HJ60 was dumped as is and replaced with a nice 89 HJ61.

It must be common, I have an 89, same tranny, even the same paint job, same problem. Does it do it often enough to need fixin? When I was in 5th everyday it only happened a couple times a month. I haven't been past 4th in a year so don't know if it's getting worst.(kinda miss 5th)

I've got the 5th gear problem too. It's fine as long as my foot is on the go pedal.
Soon as I coast or slow down it pops out.

re: Coarse Spline H55F
Are there different versions of the H55F? Other than all new parts is there an advantage to the new tranny?

Thanks,

My HJ61 is an auto magic.

The H55F came out of an 84 BJ60, but now lives in a 79 BJ40. When it was installed the plastic cup was missing on the bottom of the shifter. Had hoped for a simple fix. But we all now how that goes.

Thanks for all the input.

I was under the impression that it was for the truck in your sig.
Well forget about buying a new fine spline H55F.
Obsolete.
