I am about to start building a roof rack for my 80 and was wondering if there is a specific dimension that I should try and build it to or should I just get a tape measure and go for it? I want to build it full length and open up over the sunroof. I have the design in mind just needed some info on getting started. Also, where is the cheapest place to buy the gutter mounts? I see people talking about getting them cheap but nobody says where. Thanks

look at the h and j moose racks search for them they seem to be affective and good build threads

Personally, If I was going to build my own, I'd follow template on the overal dimensions of a ARB, mule, etc .... depending on if your going full length or not.

Otherwise the rest is up to you and what you want, need, capable of building ...

gutter rail load bars.

Check out prolineracks.com They sell load bars with gutter rail mounts for like $50.00 a pair. They are really nice, and a lot cheaper than other places sell them for.

If you want the real deal, go to the link in my signature. We have gutter mounted clamps ready to ship and I also sell crossbars so you can configure your rack as you see fit, not someone else...

Our clamps are stout, not equivalent to yakima or thule. They will hold up to abuse and weight. If you just want a bikerack, then the thule/yakima are the way to go with regards to cost...

I have been thinking about building one myself and I followed both the posts above, also I really like the Inti-Rack: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/381203-inti-rack-possibility.html
-the bad thing about the inti-rack is it is probably $1,000+ shipped to your door but they are awesome!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Also I have gutter mounts and crossbars from groucho and they are stout good stuff!

The cheapest place: I bought 8 yakima gutter mounts on Ebay
for $104 shipped. I prefer greater load distribution on the gutter than most people. In theory this should be kinder to the rain gutters on the cruiser.
My set up cost less than most people spend on 4 mounts.
Yes. they are not as stout as what Groucho sells.
I also recently found 4 Thule gutter mounts for $3 at a thrift store, I snagged them up and am still unsure what I will do with them...

nice. i have this project in the back of my head for next or 2nd in line from now.. would love to see what you have in mind for the sun roof. I was considering either split in the middle for partial storage area, or whole thing flip up/back to make containment for gear just behind.. definitely no solid designs yet tho

that second one is the rack im going to try and build. Im gonna go ahead and start on it and get the mounts later I think. I wanted to try and build some gutter mounts to save $$$ but i havent seen a good homemade version yet.

I looked at some thule mounts and they just dont look strong enough for a steel rack like that.

I think those are awesome clamps. If I were rebuilding my rack, I'd use yours in a nano-second.
