I'm the proud owner of a 'slightly abused' 216K mile 1FZ-FE, tranny and transfer case taken from a '93 FZJ80. Actually, I found it locally, loaded it onto my 3 bike trailer and hauled it home this afternoon.

The story is: the donor vehicle was converted to a diesel a few months back. The owner aquired the complete rig with a blown HG knowing that he was going to ditch the engine to do the diesel conversion. He was happy to let this all go for 'pennies on the dollar', just get it outta my barn !

My plan: my 350K '93 FZJ80 is tired, burning oil and I'm sensing a HG issue coming. My plan is to sell the tranny and transfer case and hopefully recoup most of my money. In the comfort of my garage, I'll start slowly breaking down the engine, cleaning, doing any and all PM items, re-working the valvetrain, new pistons or a hone job: basically anything I can do to return the engine to Day 1 status, just like when Mr. T did it !

If this takes a month or 6, I don't really care. Time and money permitting, hopefully it gets done before my HG issue 'matures'. I'll then swap in the new for the old over the course of a weekend with minimum down time.

Anyway, that's the plan. I'm sure a wrinkle or two will develop. I'll post pics and write a progress report as the rebuild progresses.

Just gotta get the FZJ back on the road, probably two weeks away from that, and then I can start on the engine.

Items for sale will show up in the classifieds as soon as possible.

Rgds...

They are handsome little beasts.:flamingo:

guess the PHH will come right out in less than 10 min!!!!!

score! That will be so easy with it out in the open like that
HG will be a snap

Yep, that's the idea !

I know you can do a HG in the truck but this will be soooooo easy compared to that. Plus, I get to do all the other little bits & pieces that are so hard to get at plus add a few cosmetic touches..

I have similar plans when funds allow.

Guess you got your summer planned out. Nice find bruddah!

I love the "INDUSTRIAL" look of these powerplants......

Nice find and don't forget to change the PHH! ;)

That's the way to do it, take your time rebuilding the spare while using daily driver.
350,000 is pretty good.

19000-66057 Partial Engine Assembly, List Price $11,644.96. Or, for only $11K more, you can get a 3URFE :D

Not sure yet...

What are you estimating the $$ for rebuild.

The rebuild cost is going to depend greatly on what the pistons and cylinders look like plus what main bearings and rods look like. I've read that Toyota reconmends 'only' a hone in the cylinders at 300K plus new rings, new pistons at 600K.

To be honest, and depending what I find, I might do a re-bore/re-sleeve and new pistons if that's what I feel will be necessary to get 350K out of this engine and another 17 years out of my Cruiser.

Hopefully the head and valves look good but who knows.

I'm hoping 2K on the low side but more if I need to. I'm expecting the worst but hoping for the best !
