Look at what just arrived at my place ? An oldie but a goodie !

The process continues....

After finding an engine hoist and engine stand on the SF craigslist last week, I put it to work and separated the engine from the tranny/t-case. The tranny/t-case are up for sale so they will probably sit around for a while until someone 'steals' them from me, hopefully soon as I need the space in the garage !

The engine was lowered onto my 'redneck' engine stand for now which is basically a 2x4 sheet of plywood, strengthened with some joists and then 4 swivel casters added. Once I get some weight off the engine, I'll see if I can adapt it to the engine stand I got which is one of those generic American V8 type stands.

This week at night the long, slow process starts of disassembling everything and taking stock of what I have and what I've gotten into.

I love the "INDUSTRIAL" look of these powerplants......

They look industrial because they are. The 1FZ-FE came out of Toyota's commercial/industrial division and was changed a bit to be applied to the Land Cruiser. They mated it to a bus tranny (because they build buses at the same factory) and a stout xfer case and there you have it.

As someone's sig line states: the 1FZ is a tractor engine with air conditioning.

I love seeing her naked .....

This last Tuesday night, I started on the disassembly of the engine. It's been sitting around for a week or two staring at me and I just had to know what kind of damage and carnage I would find. So, after I got the kids down, I cranked on the 80's music, grabbed a pile of Tecate's and started wrenching.

I took it slow being careful to take many pictures and keep all parts together and labeled for future use. No great suprises except that the intake was disgusting and that's going to need a serious tear-down and clean up. The major 'reveal' was once the cam covers came off. Remember, I purchased this engine knowing the HG was bad. The engine has sat for a good while so the water and oil had made quite a mess. As you can see from some of the first pics, the cams are covered in surface rust. The cam lobes, where exposed, are also covered in rust.

Once the head was removed, one could clearly see the HG failure and evidence of water. The failure is at the first cylider in the front of the engine: what I'm calling the front, the piston closest to the front of the vehicle. Is this # 1 or 6 ?

So, clearly I have a mess on my hands.

The rest of the tear-down will happen this weekend. I hope to get the pistons out and take a look at the lower end. I'm clealy into a decent hone into the cylinders and new rings. Hopefully, the cams can be saved bu I'm not so sure ? The head will have to be skimmed and the valves re-seated. Two valves are not seating and seem stuck in place so those may have to go.

A few questions: I've read about 'dipping' the components to clean them: not the block because of the bushing. So, what is dipping and who does it ? Or, how does one best clean all these components back to the virgin material ?

That's all for now... I'll be at it this weekend so hopefully I'll have a bunch more entertaining pics to share soon.

Isn't the 1FZ gasket exclusive about liking to pop the #6 cyl combustion chamber - cooling jacket?

Maybe I just haven't been worried since I did my HG years ago, but I would have sworn it was always #6 that popped.

Cool project & one I'm sure will start becoming more common as we rack up miles collectively. I know I'd like to have a spare powertrain in the curtains, for whatever hiccups are in store.

I too had read about the HG issue always being on the # 6 cylinder which I assumed was at the rear of the engine. Mine happened at the front for some reason. I guess the results are the same ?
