Most of you probably know by now that I somehow stripped out the front axle shafts in my 80. I know for sure I will need new ones, as both shafts are trashed on the diff ends.

I'd like to get some advice on Bobby Long's chromo inner axle shafts... Not his birfields, I'm fully aware of the issues there.

Question- Are they suitable for DD/full-time 4x4 use, or are they like his birfs and will wear quickly? I don't have any experience with chromo stuff, other than my buddy running chromo rear shafts in his XJ.

Thanks in advance,
-Lane

I have them in my truck, I only have maybe 500 miles, but I don't see any reason why they would "wear". They are a non wear item, meaning they should never have to be replaced unless of some sort of mechanical failure. Just my .02$

Non-wear item, eh...

I am sure there was a cause to that. That don't wear. They just sit there and spin.

I can show you mine with 200k miles on it that is stripped on the birf end. The end that goes into the diff looks brand new. The only reason mine is stripped on the other end is from breaking a birf and continuing driving another 2 miles. (had to)

Oh, there was a cause...

Anyway, I just want to be sure that there are no DD/full-time issues with the shafts themselves before I spring on a set.

Hmm. I wonder how my axles got so bad on the diff ends... One birf is showing a ton of wear on the stub, the other is almost new.

Doesn't PolyPerformance make these as well? I put them in all my trucks.

Yes they do: http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Toyota-Mini-Truck-FJ-4340-Chromoly-Birfields-p-779.html

I remember talking to a vendor about FJ80 CVs at the 2009 Easter Jeep Safari. I can't remember whether it was RCV or Poly Performance.

Regardless, RCV builds the FJ80 CVs for Poly Perfermance. The gentleman I spoke with said they were going to change the FJ80 joint so it was not quite as super strong, but would wear better considering that the FJ80 is a full time 4x4 and generally more expedition oriented.

I am sorry I can't remember the specific details, I tried calling Poly Performance and RCV to confirm, but no answer at either at the moment.

Cheers,

Jule

MUD Group buy?

I just spoke with Sean Carlini at RCV, yes they are the ones that manufacture the FJ80 joints for Poly Performance. He says that the joints have not yet been changed for higher mileage.

They are considering it, they have been getting requests for joints suitable for daily drivers. He asked me if I wanted to order a couple or a couple thousand. He says the current joint could last 30-40k miles and it is rebuildable. He said a higher mileage version would be worth considering especially since these are full time 4x4s.

This might be a good candidate for a MUD group buy, to get chromomoly CV joints that are designed to last longer (giving up a little strength, but still stronger than stock).

How much are these Poly Performance axles? I found them for the FJ40 and 60, but not for the 80 front.

30k-40k? Aren't there reports of people getting clicking after only 12k-15k (maybe 20k on the outside)? I know a local mudder to me that has chromoly birfs started getting clicking after only 12k.

I bought mine from Longfield. FJ-80 INNER AXLES - Longfield Super Axles 125$. I don't know about Poly, but eventually I will buy some for the rear of mine. If it doesn't completely fall apart by then. If that happens I'll put Rockwells under it. LOL

I have heard about the Chromalloy Birfs wearing out in 10K to 15K miles...but this is the first I heard about issues with the axles.

$475 a Pair for the rears. They do make the front axles as well...you have to call and ask for those. I have purchased them in the past. I think they are around the same price...but you need to call them to check pricing to be sure.

I have these in both my trucks. Front & Rear on my 1997 and Rear only on my 1996.

He's talking about the birfs

Chromo birfields

We also stock the chomoly inner axles and birfields of fzj80. As of now the 4340 joints are designed with strength in mind. We also offer replacement grade. Eventually we should have a high strength one that is more suitable to fulltime awd.

Would be nice :grinpimp:

I personally would skip the Chromoly all together. I have 230k on my stock drive train and drive about as aggressively as anyone out there. I did twist a stock rear axle however, replaced it with a chromoly one and it twisted much easier.

If you guys are busting up your stuff you are doing something wrong, bad maintenance or bad driving, pick one.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm gonna go with a set of chromo inners from Longfield.

Just ponied up $400 for exhaust stuff yesterday, OEM O2's from CDan and Magnaflow cats, since I'm still on the original stuff (O2's throwing CEL, cats spent). Gonna redo the whole exhaust while I'm at it, 2.5" pipe and a Flowmaster 50. Still gotta find birfs and spider/side gears for the diff.

I'm gonna try to do everything at the same time so I'm not out my 80 longer than I need it.
