Chromoly inners - Need advice.

We also stock the chomoly inner axles and birfields of fzj80. As of now the 4340 joints are designed with strength in mind. We also offer replacement grade. Eventually we should have a high strength one that is more suitable to fulltime awd.

Hey, question. I saw you guys carry spider gear sets, would you by chance have one for an FJ80 front?

Rick - Did you twist another axle? The Chromalloy one? I did not realize that.

I personally would skip the Chromoly all together. I have 230k on my stock drive train and drive about as aggressively as anyone out there. I did twist a stock rear axle however, replaced it with a chromoly one and it twisted much easier.

If you guys are busting up your stuff you are doing something wrong, bad maintenance or bad driving, pick one.

Sounds like wheeling to me. When you wheel your junk, sh!t breaks.:meh:

I twisted the Chrome moly shaft on that poker run we did. The stock shaft was done on gaurdrail in Tellico. To be honest the stock shaft took a lot more punishment that the chrome moly one did.

The chrome moly shafts are less likely to break, they are not stronger. They will deform before breaking.

You guys can keep that stuff.

I'm starting to think like Rick. I just went through another rear USPS hub and this stuff only started happening after I went with the PP rear axles....

They might go into my spare bin and I might go back with stock shafts.

i agree that the stock stuff is stout. I am impressed at the abuse my stock stuff absorbed when I was running stock stuff.

however people are using these 80's in ways to extremes they were not designed-big tires, rockcrawling, etc.

better/stronger parts are needed to meet the greater stresses imposed

Just to give an idea of the difference between the two in my experience.

I twisted the stock shaft going up guard rail down in Tellico. There is a YouTube video of it and it's one of the more harder obstacles in there.

When I got home I removed the flange nuts to the rear axle, placed a crow bar between the flange and hub and with some effort got the axle to POP out.

In the poker run I had to climb up between two rocks to get through. Maybe a total of two feet. I again twisted the rear shaft. When I returned home I removed the flange nuts and placed the same crow bar in between the flange and hub. After several pulls and adjusting to get move leverage I BROKE the crow bar. I then switched up to a wrecking bar and 3 lb sledge hammer.

After about a half hour of beating the wrecking bar and pulling viciously on it the shaft POP'd out. Unfortunately during this process I also broke the locker's shift fork and the diff had to be pulled and repaired.

Now you can go ahead and side track the thread with another ARB vs E-locker debate if you like. But the fact is still the same, the Chromoly was a way bigger headache and caused problems a lot sooner.

FWIW, I was talking about front axle shafts, not the rear axle shafts with abnormally short splines...

While the locking in place issue might not be there I think the axles will respond to loads similarly just as I've seen on the rear. I would think that a bent twisted shaft would exacerbate wear.

Was it just the one shaft that twisted? Or did you twist both of them? :hhmm:

driver error on that one, you pined the throttle on that obstacle :flipoff2: show off! trying to impress some girls in a jeep and you broke your junk:)

I have used your gear JT Diff Gear Sets in both my cruisers. They are awesome!

LandTank did the install on both my cruisers and those babies purr ... very quiet and smooth...but LandTank takes the time to do it right ... proper size spacers and good craftsmanship make a world of difference. They run alike a Swiss watch and a proper install makes a world of difference. Thanks Rick..!! :)

So do you know how the Poly Performance Chromalloy Axles wear? Do you have any idea? I put them in all my trucks and now I am thinking I have to swap them out on my next axle rebuild.

I am doing the same.

When he says the joints wear out he is talking about the birfs not the axles.
