Hi Everyone,

First time poster here. I've just aquired a set of 36x12.5 simex centipedes for my FJ80. At present its lifted 3in at the rear, and 2in at the front. Now, I'm hoping to get away with just lifting the front another inch so its 3in lifted all around to fit the centipedes - so just wanted to ask, anyone with experience know if I can get away with 3in lift, or should I really be looking to go 4in?

At present im just running bigger springs and shocks ... I'm planning to buy some adjustable panhard rods and caster correction bushes when i increase the front to 3in. I'm just not sure about going to 4in all round as it looks like i need to lengthen my brake lines and ??drop my crossmember as well ...

Appreciate the feedback.
Cheers,
Dave.

You should be fine. Several guys here are running 4" and 315/35" tires. I ran 35's without a lift for a few days... The tires will probably rub when it flexes out, though.

I know that BooKilla ran with 315's with not much rubbing, but when he went to 36's he started to get a lot of rubbing. IIRC he ended up trimming a lot and still got rubbing (even with the OME 2.5" lift). He's gone to the 4" Slee lift since, not sure if that took care of his rubbing or not.

lift/tires in sig
1.5" bumpstop spacers in rear, no mud flaps and flares trimmed ...no rubbing
front has factory 93-94 ext bumpstop and getting a little rub at full flex, need more spacer

Yes, it can be done, it's all about suspension spacing. I have zero rubbing on my lift, which is comparable to OME heavy, with 35's and a good inch at full compression to the fenders. If Interco ever comes out with a 36" trxus I will be running them in a heartbeat. Until then I'm sticking with 35's.

Here's a pic of my 35's at full stuff. You can see I pretty easily have room for another 1/2" of tire on each side, but 37's would be pushing it, and 36's might get to the frame on full stuff on the rear axle.

Lot easier to stay with 35's, which is why I'm sticking to them after a lot of back and forth on going up to 37's. At some point, the value of keeping it simple is the greatest value if you don't truly *need* the larger tires, and they are a nice to have at best for me.

Dave,

Is it really a FJ80 or Fzj... the earlier models seem to fit the meats a lil better. Also are you running flares or not?

I think you could do it....sure it may rub. Like mentioned above its all about spacing, both suspension and wheel backspacing. I currently have 37's on 4'' of lift. and it rubs the rear frame and front control arms at full lock( also running rims w/ 5.5 bs instead of stock 4.5) ; but i still wheel it w/ the occasional burp of some tire tread finding metal somewhere when stuffed.

it depends mainly on rim ofset, i run 37 x 12.5/17 on standard rim offset, and 60mm bump spacers in the rear, and 40mm in the front, and I have moved the diff forward 12mm, and the 37's just touch everywhere.

But if your tyres dont rub, it means you can fit bigger ones.

35's fit on std rims pretty well with just 30mm bump spacers.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

It is technically a FZJ80 (late 93 model). Rims are aftermarket alloys (16x8 - offset unknown). Its a GX model (so no flares) but probably going to have to do something about that soon because my 31x10.5's already stick out a bit (especially on one side without adj. panhards).

Thinking I'll get the spare tyre swapped over to a 36" before work tommorrow, then I can dummy-fit that after work and see how much clearance im going to get with steering etc ... Then if i can get away with it, fit all 4 tyres and putt around town with my current 3" rear / 2" front lift and see how that goes before looking at what else I need to modify suspension wise ...

Cheers,
Dave.

there you go talking about need again nay. you didn't *need* 5.29s till you had them. after you mount the 37's you will *need* 40's

I know, that's why I have to talk myself into keeping the 35's. :hhmm:
