Got my lights Friday and had time to put them in today. Here's how it went:

HIR bulb mod. Simple. I suggest NOT using a file as this will create a lot of vibration for the filament. It's incredibly easy to generate the high frequency vibrations the bulb would never see in a car, and shake them till they break. I've personally done this twice. At the very least, you're fatiguing and shortening the filament's life. The material is interesting and yielded very well to a hacksaw blade's fine teeth without vibrating the bulb. With an old bulb for reference, took about 1 minute per bulb, and I used a thick cloth to hold it firmly in the vise. Be sure you've got it held well as obviously if your blade catches it's headed for the concrete. Then a few wipes with some sandpaper to clean up the edges.

Popped right in. Compared to a very high quality German NARVA +30, I would say it puts out more total light, and the light seems to be in a slightly larger pattern as viewed against a white wall - perhaps 15% larger. I don't know which pattern is correct as I was unable to discern any difference in filament position comparing them in my hand, but clearly they're slightly different. My feeling is the NARVAs are slightly off as over the miles I've felt like they were a pair of beams vs creating a smooth pool of light like the HIRs do. The big improvement is that they're a more of a natural light frequency vs the NARVA's notably whiter light against the wall (NARVAs are faintly blueish, not the trendy look, but discernably). This is also nice as to an oncoming car the HIRs don't have as much of a harsh look even though they're actually brighter than my NARVAs. This means less "flashing" at me though the NARVAs didn't get too much of it.

I also ordered Daniel Stern's suggested upgrades for the rear blinkers and the brake/tail. These went in perfectly and here's how they performed when I put all of them in on one side only:

Brake/Tail. No discernible difference on the taillamp brightness vs the factory original (!) Koitos labeled 27w/8w with the 8w obviously the taillamp filament. On the brake lamp filament though - nice increase in brightness! You could see the difference even during the daytime, and at night it is much brighter. Very pleasing.

Blinkers. With the emergency flashers on, there is NO question which side had the new ones - FAR brighter. And that's compared to a set of 20w Osram halogens with converters I fitted when the truck was new 11 years ago. So you guys replacing stock bulbs with these are going to be blown away. Hugely bright, these things are going to be annoying to someone behind you at a light. Frankly speaking, if these things protect my family a single time in foul weather, they have done their job and I think ALL vehicle rear lights should be this vivid and crisp - it would probably prevent thousands of rear end collisions a year. I did notice the new blinkers take a bit longer to hit full brightness which is probably simply due to the larger draw. You would not notice this if you were not a fanatic about lights like I am.

So, overall a big success and I'm looking forward to assessing the HIR pattern on an upcoming trip. I did not like the amount of flash back in snow on the NARVA's color last winter, and these will definitely be an improvement in the coming months here in the North. I have noticed this flashback with all the cooler bulbs and lights I own and the friend's cars with HIDs. My HID bike light is also really bad with flashback in fog - wow. It's the frequency, so these HIRs should be just what the doctor ordered.

I can't wait to get mine!

Did anyone get the reverse lamps like me?

Yep. I ordered those and highs and lows. Just can't wait for the damn things to get her and be installed. :bounce:

I too got the highs, lows and reverse. Bulbs were here when i got back from vacation last night. Can't wait to put them in.

Well, I ordered the HIR low beams for the LX470 and was dissappointed when I recieved the HIR high beams.

Turns out it was a good thing becase the LX uses H1 style bulbs for the low beams. Teaches me to order without looking first, but at least I've got some good high beams now.

Now I need to track down some good H1's that match the HIR's in performance. Anyone?

I put the new HIR bulbs in my Mother-in-laws car last night and she loved them. She said she could actually see where she was going (that and the tune up after not having one for 4 years helped). I am using the back up bulbs in the LC and they are much brigher than stock.

H1 upgrade bulbs. Easy, get some H1 100watt german bulbs from Daniel Stern and a wiring harness upgrade to take the extra draw of the bulbs. Old school tech, with new style light assemblies. You will love it.

Also, note the H1 bulbs have much more output than the 9006 bulb to start with. Stock they are 1500 lumens (one reason they are used). There are Narve +30 and +50 bulbs that push it up to about 1700 lumens and the 100watt bulbs are up at 2600!!!! Also not that Stern has the 9012 HIR bulbs listed at 1870 lumens. See this link:

Cool! Thanks.

Whoa there, Sparky. Cary, did you intend to recommend 100 watt bulbs for his LOW beams?? Even here in a rural area they'd be unusable due to pissed off oncoming cars. I suggest you try something like 80 watts or simply ask Daniel. Would be awesome to drive behind these all the time, but 100 watt low beams might get you pulled over and fined as well.

You have a point there. I am used to the old euro lamps in German cars which are much lower. You can run 80 or 100 watt bulbs in these without blinding people because the headlamps are 30" from the ground. However, given that HID lamps are now being run in SUV's regularly (2800-3200 lumens) and the Lexus uses a projector lamp so there is a sharp cutoff and good light control, I don't think there would be a stray light, blinding issue. My only potential concern would be be heat from the bulb melting the housings if they are to small or lots of plastic.

I ordered 4 of the H1 + 50's (one set of spares) from Stern figuring that would be good. Even though the beam pattern in the LX is pretty darn good and it would be a rare occurence for an oncoming vehicle to be affected, I figured the simplicity of a stock type set up (and non-illegal at that) would be fine.

I'll post back here, errr in the 100 series section anyhow, when they get installed.

FWIW, the high beam HIR's made a noticable improvement. About the same as the ones in my 80 with the Slee Harness.

NOTE: Daniel stern recommended disabling the daytime running lights with the HIR high beams installed (they use the same bulb) because of their brightness. According to him, Toyota is more accomadating in this regard than GM, but I'm still not sure how to do it other than running with the regular low-beam headlights on all the time.

Regarding irritating oncoming drivers, just be advised that in foul weather or with wet roads (just when you don't want an incapacitated oncoming driver), the full effect of even well cutoff beams is still blasting them as reflection off the roadway. This is something I've worried about for years. We're a retirement destination and there are a lot of elderly folks on the road and that's an issue for them. I like old people and find myself talking to them a lot. Bright oncoming lights are a common theme when you get to talking about various things.

Of course, the UPS man just delivered my winter 80/100 Subaru bulbs, so I don't always take my own advice. OTOH, I also got a pair in my normal caliber 55/100 in case these prove to be a menace, in which case I'll toss the 80s in for a long road trip. But I'd never go 100w low beams period.

Doug:
what's the model or typ enumber on the blinkers, reverse, and brake bulb upgrades?
thanks
Eric

Eric,

Give Daniel an email. I've only got the blinkers, and brake bulbs.

I love success! Just finished replacing the Highs, Lows, and Reverse lights. The Low beams are the only ones that need to be trimmed. I used a 32 (fine) tooth hacksaw blade and just held it in my hand, wrapped the base of the bulb in a kitchen towel and held it lightly in a vise. Took maybe a third off one side, a third off the top, and 1-2mm off the other side. Put one of my old bulbs in the toolbox for a spare and kept my extra new bulbs uncut in their boxes. They seem like 2X as much light as before though I'm sure they're not.
Thanks Doug for all the legwork and hints on this GREAT mod.

I installed mine tonight as well. Here are pictures with one OE bulb, and one HIR bulb. I'll let you guys figure out which bulb is the new one:

OK. Got the H1+50's from Stern yesterday and will put them in tonight. Turns out, these are the European Osram Silverstars (not the weak American version of Silverstars) so they should be good to go.

Just thought I'd post this here since it was discussed in this thread, but if anyone is interested I'll be posting the results in the 100 series section.

I'm skeptical of some of these taillight bulbs. The two that say "kyrpton" on the invoice look like standard incandescent bulbs to me, and aren't noticeably brighter. They're certainly less bright than the halogen stop/brake and turn bulbs I bought from JCWhitney. The Narva 35w halogens fit both back and turn, better quality than my JCWhitneys and much brighter than the "krypton" bulbs. My JCWhitney halogens are going back in the tail/brake and turn holes. I haven't tried the headlight bulbs, not in a mood to continue this 'upgrade' I'll keep the "kryptons" as spares, just because I'm too cheap to throw them out. I still want a set of taillights for the wife's truck, perhaps I'll go with JCWhitney again.

And while I'm ranting, is it normal to charge shipping for backordered items?
