I have a 93 FZJ80 and I can be driving along at 70mph and all at once it starts boggin down and won't run above an idle. After it does that awhile it'll sputter back up to 70 again.

It's like it's starving for gas but I opened the gas tank and it is very clean and I also replaced the fuel filter but it still does it. Other than that it runs real good!:confused::confused:

I have already spent several hundred $$$ trying to fix it so I hope some one knows exactly what the problem is before I throw gas on this thing and strike a match:eek::eek::eek:!!!!

I have had something kinda similar happen. Mine was always after having the battery disconnected (while it's relearning) and usually happened on an on-ramp while I was trying gain speed. It wouldn't down shift or spool up, just sputter along. Strangely, it has not happen since I replaced the O2 sensors.

Sorry if this doesn't help.

How's your ignition wires?

Change yr in fule tank sock/filter...$14 .....mine did the same thing!
changed the filter, fixed!

If its not the fuel filter, its most likely your injectors. Not all of them, but even one is enough to take away power from one of your cylinders. Make sure their not corroded, they tend to go bad after 100k Also does your engine throw any codes when this happens?

One time while it was doing it it threw a CEL but went away and the dealer ship said there were no stored codes.
I have checked the sock in the tank and it looks brand new like maybe the PO replaced it trying to fix the problem.

I thought of that but would that come and go. Remember....one minute it runs like a champ and the next it's sputtering and won't do over 10mph!

Burned, melted, or otherwise damaged wires in engine harness near EGR pipe??

I will check tomorrow but wouldn't that throw a code...miss fire on cyl 1 or something???

BTW I haven't looked real close but the cover is off and nothing looked bad at a glance!

Just have seen pics (here) of messed up wires, usually a bit down behind the EGR valve and pipe. Only way to see them is to pull apart the bundle. I am not that brave to pull apart a harness, and you have to lay on the engine on your belly to do it unless you have one of those neat ladder thingys that go across the engine bay. Had a harness problem in my 80; one wire got fried, but it caused my alarm to shut down the engine. But your's?? Fuel flow? Electrical? Sorry, I'm not much help.

Hmmmm...you may be onto something with the wires...did you see those pics on mud? If so please give me a link..... I didn't see it.

I did see the pic within the last week on mud, can't find the link; have to search a bit.

Looked at it.....the pipe coming out of the EGR going down behind the eng. and the wiring harness is like pressed up against it...I can't see it but it feels like it is kinda melted in a curve around the pipe......would that be what your talking about?????:frown::frown::frown:

Yes, if the wires inside the harness have been damaged; very very common problem; seems like it often has to do with wires for the fuel injectors, but any wire in that bundle can be melted. There originally were some clamps that were meant to hold the harness away from the EGR pipe, but they get broken etc, and the harness then lays down closer to the hot pipe; Some guys put a heat shield around the pipe and/or harness to solve the problem. But first, got to find the bad wires; this is outside my area of knowledge, but they need to be traced elctronically ie: it is not just a visual check; however, if you do see an obviously melted shorted or burned through wire, that may be it. Hardest part imo is just getting to the bundle to work on it. If the bundle is very very bad, some guys have bought the entire harness and replaced it; relatively inexpensive from CDan (?350), just a lot of time to replace it and get everything hooked back up properly as has been discussed (search for it).

Lots of heat protection products on the market, sheets, wraps, socks, etc. I thought about the sock after I replaced my EGR valve; that was the time to wrap the EGR pipe; Oh well, maybe in the summer.
