Hi all,

I have a KZJ70 LandCruiser II here in the UK. The more I learn of this vehicle the more i realize it's a Toyota parts-bin head case. So now I'm wanting to know what diff I have.

Looking at the figures on the back of the front diff casing it reads 36H

Does 36H mean anything to anyone?

Any info you can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
PJ

according to the spec sheetm, and if no one has changed them out the KZ came with a 4.3 ratio mini truck diff...

36H sounds like a bra size :)

Seriously, look at the build tag on the firewall in the engine bay. For a KZJ70, the tag should either say G282 (4.3 ratio) or G142 (4.56 ratio) under "AXC" axle code. Not sure what a Euro spec vehicle comes with though.

it's a hilux (minitruck) diff

My Diff

thanks for the info on the diff
I'll have a look at the build plate tomorrow.

as for the quip about bra size?... my wife says I'm only allowed to know hers - 38D. Oh well if that's hers a 36H would give us both black eyes!

Diff Number?

OK. I've had a look at the build plate on my LCII and I've put all the numbers down below. The only 'G' number i can see is the in the long number at the very bottom. Does this help anyone help me in figuring out what diff I have?

Wow, I can't say I've heard of G975 as an axle code but the format sounds almost correct. I'll ask around . . .

Dave

I've just had a look the http://www.off-road.com/tlc/faq/axle.html website. As for my diff it tell's me the following:

G = 8"
9 = 4.222
7 = 3.9 HD
5 = 4 pinoions LSD

What does all this mean? 8" is 8" that I undersand. LSD is limited slip diff. HD I'm assuming mean's Heavy Duty. But what do all the number's mean?

I had a look at the codes given above to try to match them to the ratio but nothing seems to match up?

Thanks
PJ

I found it. G975 is a 4.56 LSD. For some reason the G974 (4.56 open or e-locker) and G975 axle codes are Euro spec only.

Dave,

many many thanks for your help for me in this matter. It really is appreciated. One final question though. How do you get 4.56 as the ratio from the numbers i listed above. Or are my numbers incorrect?

Also... as per your question regarding Bundera's/90's in another thread.... I've got to go back through the information I downloaded to get a definite answer for you. I'll also see over the next week or so [for your info if you're interested] as to whether or not they fitted those diff's to the Hilux's/4Runner's/Surf's out here. Let me know if you're interested

You're welcome.

I don't know how off-road.com obtains their axle codes, I suspect some of it is from Rob Mullens FAQ (birfield.com) but Toyota doesn't always stick to hard and fast rules in their numbering convention.

If you have more info, please forward them to me at dtay@comcast DOT net. I always love to learn more Toyota trivia :)

Cheers,
Dave

That tells you how accurate the 50th Anniversary book is.

Including the comment that the "J" in the Landcruiser designation also stands for "Jeep" :D

I've been reading some magazines that have got me confused about my diff.... is the 4.56 ratio for the front diff or the rear? Are they the same or different? If different how do we find out what the other diff is?
