Has anyone rebuilt a 2lt? Have an approximate cost on parts?

I have a '89 LJ73. My #2 piston is pushing 50 lbs the rest are hitting 400+.

Is there a bolt in replacement diesel (or gasser). I was told a 3b would require replacing the tranny. I believe the tranny is a r150

Thanks

Any idea whats wrong with it? With that much difference it might be a bad valve.

Have you tried to put air pressure in that cyl with the valves closed?

Also, if you add oil to the cyl and it has little affect it could indicate a bad valve. The cylinder would have to be extremely bad for oil to not make a difference. Id test it out then pull the head.

You could bolt in a 22R or pickup V6. They came with R trans, but I have no idea if the input shafts are the same. You should at least be able to swap the LJ transfer case over to one of these though so long as it has an r150-1. Not sure about the mounts, but you would probably have to change those for the gassers. Sorry not much help.

I think the 1KZ T is the best. Might even bolt up to your trans with a 1KZ bellhousing but you would need some new mounts
There are also 3L, 5L and 5LE,which are versions similar to yours but no factory turbo on them as far as I know.

Your tranny info is on the aluminium plate on the firewall. I would have guessed it to be a R151;)

The 3B requires a lot of work as it is tall and the light duty Landcruisers like yours have the bonnet sloping down at a greater angle to meet up with the shorter front end

Another option which is potentialy a lot of work ,is the 2.8 HS diesel. Latest reports are that the supply has dried up.

I think the rebuild kts are about $1000 AUD or less. Try aussie ebay for a price .

But I would try and diagnose the exact problem with existing engine 1st;)

It's the piston that's bad. Did the compression test with adding oil and got 80 psi. Also, there is severe blow by.

is this johns?

Is the wall scored bad on that one cyl? I'd try replacing that piston and rings. Couldn't hurt and not all that expensive.

Use a ridge reemer to take the ridge out. On just about every 2lt I have seen apart develop a fair sized ridge on the top of the block. Depending if they had a previous head gasket failure the top of the bore on the block gets pitted

I guess that is the reason it was farting along so slow during Cruise Moab! BTW this is Matt, good to see ya on the board! Your LJ, as you know, is known to be in the "Light Duty" series of Land Cruisers and share many minitruck components on the running gear/chassis. So a 3B is not a direct swap but a 22R-E might be worth looking into, though the conversion from diesel to gas plus all the other issues would make it a substantial swap. I know Toyota made an RJ73 though, so maybe the motor mounts etc. are similar?

Guess I decided what to do

Picked up a 22re with 102,000 miles on it. complete with ECU, harness, air cleaner , cat and gas tank. $600

The question now is does that bolt to my R151 or do I need advance adapter?

Hi Matt. What are you doing in the 70 pages

Cruisers are in my blood, and the 70 series is in my sights! :p

What's EPC ?

Electronic parts catalog.

I have an earlier CD version, but it does not cover LJs. There was a group of guys trying to create an online version some time back. I'm not sure how successful they were. Search EPC in thread titles.

Sorry to hear the diesel go :frown:

A little search on the internet (especially at Toyota truck websites) should help you figure out which engine/tranny combos are easily done. Those minitruck guys have it all figured out lol. It may be correct that the R151 was available with the 3.0 V6 and the 22RT-E (turbo'd 22R-E), while the W56 (?) was available with the standard 22R-E (but maybe only on 2wd models).

I don't know, I'm gonna shut up, but Wes and I talked about it briefly last night and when you consider that you could drop your oil pan and pull the head, hone the cylinders and replace some rings and that would take care of 90+% of your problem, that sounds a lot easier/better than doing an engine/electronics swap!

I am in a world hurt.... My 2LT engine is nearly toast.
We tool it apart, piston as shot, the bearings are down to copper.
I need to completely rebuilt this engine or find a completely new engine. Can anyone help me source parts or a rebuilt 2LT
Thanks
Olivier

There are usually some on Ebay. They are usually the newer type with the better cylinder head. You'd have to swap mechanical injection parts to it and fiddle around with the glow system etc. Do a search, as a couple guys have done this recently.

What happened to it may I ask? Dropped a pre-cup? How many kms?

You could also upgrade to a better engine if you're up for a project....

There is a British dude in Texas that specializes in 2LT parts, but haven't bought from him.
Quantico Cylinder Heads or something.

There are quite a few 5Ls and 2LTs that come up for auction on FleaBay every other week or so.
Just make sure you are prepared for an engine that has been dropped a few times before it got to you.

I picked one up for $2200 delivered, and it has been running fine for the past 6K.

Caveat Emptor, however you spell it.
