SO I really dig the side ladder on 60's and 62's. I was looking through the registry and found a few but was wonderin if anyone else has done the same? and if they had pics?!

Anyone?

here is some that i have found

I've always envisioned one that would compression clamp to the top rail of the roof rack and have rubber capped ends that would make contact with the outside of the rear tire (for lower starting point) when not in use it could be stored on the roof rack. if it were stout enough, it could also be used as a traction ramp placed under the tire.

I like the more beefy ones that are permanintly mounted. They act as a ladder / side protection fro the 60/62's huge but.

As mentioned in other threads on the subject, a fixed side ladder may get hung up on branches and rocks. Several rear bumper vendors offer an integrated rear ladder on one of the swing outs.

This thread shows some other options includig a removable side mount (post 10) and a break down ladder I made (post 12).

Hope you guys don't spend any time on tight trails. My truck has grooves down the quarters already, I couldn't imagine how much crap one of those ladders would grab on ATV trails, I have a feeling they would be damage multipliers.

My ladder is set up exactly as described by Trapper although I have never used it as a traction ramp. easy on and off and only carry it when needed.

I am planning on making a roll up rope ladder that clips to the roof rack via carabiners, that rolls up and stows in the truck when not in use. Obviously not the permanent hard ladder, but perhaps an alternative.

I happen to wheel with RockDoc on those tight and twisty trails, and short of building one into an all around tube armour system, I can only see disaster.

Caleb,

I know it won't work with the way your back is set up, but there are some rear ladders that would work for some folks.

I have a rear ladder on my 80 and love it (I haven't used it much though! :hillbilly:)

I don't have a 60/62, but have sold some to a few mudders before if anyone's interested. I'll have a few that I have in stock for anyone's viewing pleasure! (Yes, I need to sell them! LOL!!) :grinpimp: No drilling required! ;)

Sorry for the hijack!

I like the idea of a side mount removable ladder. One that hooks to the rack then butts up against the tire.

Question though?

If you need a ladder to access the roof rack, how you going to store it up there and retrieve it?

Maybe something like 2mbb mentioned in that other thread from 07 (above). Attaches to the rack and butts against the tire for stability, folds in the middle for ease of storage and maximizing available space, and strong enough to be used as a traction device?

Once folded in half, could be mounted to the outside of the rear spare or can holders. If none exist, to the bumper in a horizontal position?

Even inside along a rear bulkhead via the wingnut system like the spare tire in a car trunk?

The latter concept would make it strong, stable, easy to access for use, could be uses on the rear of side of the truck, and keep it out of thieving hands and secure inside the truck:cheers:
Could build 2 if you wanted duals and mount one on either bulkhead in the rear.

What does MUD think?

I think a ladder mounted on the side is just asking to be ripped off the rig on any even slightly tight trail. Been on way too many of those to even consider a ladder mounted on the side of the rig.

I have never needed a ladder to get to my roof rack. This includes getting to a spare tires, fuel cans, etc. I just put down the window in the rear door. Climb up on top of the rear tire and then step onto the rear window sill (with the door closed of course). And I'm a fat guy! And for the rear, just put down the tailgate and stand on that. To me, the ladder looks more difficult to climb than what is already there. Looks cool though, I'll give you that. JMHO.

That's the reason I suggested the removeable type. Take it off when riding, sow it and use it when needed.

I'm not standing on my window sill to reach the roof (for a variety of reasons:lol:).

I can see it now. Trying to explain it to my health care provider, aka: clueless insurance agent...

ok Mr. B., once again.

Exactly what were you doing when you busted yer arse?:lol::cheers:

Not that anybody's asked for it, but here are some pics of the Toyota ladder for the 80 on my rig.

Even with the rear wing/visor back there getting on the roof rack is as easy as 1-2-3! Again, I didn't have to drill any holes and it can be removed rather easily.

That particular one is made of aluminum (light) so I have no problem keeping the hatchback up with the ladder on even.

The rearward visibility is not bad either.
I had a pic of it from the cabin, but can't find it!

Anyway... carry on!

That looks beefy!

I'm guessing you don't have any issues with the top part of the ladder touching the hatch, right?

Looks good!

Not at all. When the gate is locked the ladder doesnt move at all, not even a wiggle of any kind. You can see the space on the side view and the ladder follows the contour of the rear gate and hatch too.
And Yes.......it is beefy.
Thanks!
