I lost my Cruiser keys, a/ like a dumb-a$$ I don't have a spare:doh:. I called the Toyota dealership a/ they told me that they could make a new key from a number that is located on the passenger side lock mechinism. Before I start ripping my door apart, has anyone heard this before? I was told that they can't make a key from vin numbers past 1992.

Yes. There is supposed to be a number on that lock cylinder. You could probably also take the lock cylinder into a locksmith and have them make a key for you or re-key all the cylinders to a new key.

Pull the cylinder from the paseenger side door (It only take 5 minutes), take it to your dealer. They can cut the key based on the code while you wait for about 10 bucks.

yeah, i've had that work too. my buddy and i can swap keys, he has an '88 62 and i have an '85 60. that being said, my key does not work in my brothers '84 60. doesn't hurt to give it a try. i think toyota had 5 different keys in the cruisers, or something like that.

I have five friends with 60 or 62s and they can all open and start my truck but I cant do any of their trucks.

A 40 key works on my 62. It was a newly cut key and needed a little force to go into the ign, but now it goes in (and works) smoothly, no problem. It doesn't work for the back hatch nor the glovebox, but does on both front doors. I think the cylinders that get used the most get worn down to the point where almost a screwdriver will operate them.

This is exactly right... If my memory serves me right it should be a 4 digit number with the letter "K" in front of it.

"KXXXX" - As mentioned, Toyota only had 80 different keys codes, but once 20 years of wear works on them, that 80 turns into about 5 or 6. My Buddies 85' mini-truck key could start my 83' FJ60 and my other buddies 89 Honda Civic...

Shouldn't be a big deal...

Take luck.

Pulled the passenger lock cylinder, not even a one  job, jotted the code down (they all start with K and have four digits), ran over to the stealership and for $4.99 plus tax, I got a new (Ilco) key. They don't stock OEM Toyota keys of this vintage. $OR sells a key blank with protector for about $13, and it better damn well be OEM for that kind of coin for a key blank, uncut.

Don't know if it's good or bad that we can all start each others Cruisers....But I have the same situation with my 60, my buddies 40 & both my Minis. A friend in need is a friend with keys...

If you want OEM keys Ebay is your friend. You can even upgrade to the newer black plastic head Toyota key. I did that on my 60. My dad's locksmith carries OEM Toyota keys in stock. I think they are about 5 dollars for the plastic head and $4 for the solid metal ones. Toyota did change the style of the shank in 1991 with the 80 series so those style shanks won't work with the earlier units. I'm all about cheap keys. My back up for my 100 is actually a Toyota Camry key. It has the theft deterrent signal deal in it but no keyless entry features.

I lost my only key and haven't been able to find it. I went to the dealership in frederick MD and they told me they couldnt make a key from the VIN because they only keep records 20 years back.

I'll take a look at the passenger side lock today.

Yes - as the OPs said, take the pass side lock out (takes 5 mins) and take it to the dealer and they can cut a key from the number stamped on it -- It's not the VIN.

Your limiting factor here is going to be the idiot/savant behind the counter. Ask if they have a counter guy who knows what a carburetor is and go with him.

Make sure they use the right blank (ask me how I know)

Make sure the key works before you leave (ask me how I know)

Make sure they will give you your money back or cut a new key if you get it home and it won't turn the ignition (ask me again how I know)

GL.

Several of my keys are interchangable I guess it depends on how worn the cylinders are.
