I picked up a 2F yesterday, the PO did not know what it was out of. It is a factory replacement engine I think because it has no serial number. I was surprised how well it turned over having sat for a couple of years. I took a couple of pictures but only one was worth posting. What can I look for to help identify this engine? I'm going to sell it but I'd like more info if possible. Is that double pulley on the water pump unusual?

I'm sure that if you post more pics you will get some help here.

Does it have an oil cooler?
Does it have a PS pump or is it tapped for one?

In ANY case if it is a replacement block with the original bolt-ons added it will likely be a hybrid... I'm SURE someone (JimC) will be able to tell you EXACTLY what each and every component is and what model/year it came from if you post pics.... this is a little like those games where you get a close-up pic of something and have to guess what it is...

yeah, I know Mark, the other pics were too blurry to post so I figured I'd start the game here. More pics tomorrow.

The casting date is on the LH side of the engine, and also along the LH top surface of the head.

The data plate may not have an SN if it was sold as a bare block, but it should be stamped with F or 2F to indicate bore size.

The WP or oil cooler or dissy doens't mean anything, as those were parts bolted on after bare block left the dealer parts department.

Thanks Jim, that's the kind of stuff I'm looking for. The dang thing is so heavy I haven't even seen the other side of the motor. It was laying on the manifold side when I got it and still is. I was hoping the picking hooks would still be on it but no luck. I'll get it stood up tonight and do a better inspection.
Thanks

Here's a couple more pics.

Looks pre-'79 to me. Doesn't your '77 have a two-row water pump pulley on it? Mine does.

Yes, mine does, I just hadn't noticed before.

I checked a little better and found the block number. 015446. Early 1975 engine. Did not pull the valve cover to see head number but I'm guessing it has never been off.

Thanks Jim, I'll check closer. Same side as the engine stamp?

Same side as block date code and casting number. The manifold side of the head.

Head reads 6819 below that 24

Date code pic

Interesting. Here is a pic of how I've always seen the numbers listed. It doesn't show the number at the very front that lists the year. But you can clearly see the casting number next to the #2 cylinder and the month and day code over by #3 cylinder.

HTH,

I checked the head yesterday and didn't write down the numbers but it is a March of '75 head so probably original to the rest of the block. Actually looked pretty good on the inside.
Thanks
