I have a 76 fj40 - trying to get the fuel gauge to work. I replaced the sending unit and the needle on the gauge moves to just above the E - but then goes no further. when I turn the rig off it goes back to its resting position. Any body got positive ideas? I have looked around for a replacement gauge but have had no luck. any help greatly appreciated!;p

Make sure the needle isn't getting caught up on the cover plate, or the backing.

Maybe a dumb question but how much gas do you have in the tank? Just replaced my poly tank with a factory one and could not get the fuel gage to work. Figured I could figure it out later and went and filled the tank. Have no idea why but now my gas gauge works again, go figure.
Good luck

John

Another thought,
when you replaced the sending unit did you make sure that the arm swung towards the rear of the tank? If you had it turn around it would contact the tank before it could swing all the way up as it would with a full tank.

fill her up!

I had the gauge out of the cluster in hopes of exchanging with a 72 gauge - they dont interchange. anyway the needle seems to be free.
And yes - the first thing I did was go fill up the tank with no change in the reading - but never a dumb question
The sending unit seemed to fit into the opening only one way - but I had a friend helping and not sure we checked the direction of the float - Ill check it out
Thanks for the leads:clap:

How far below the lowest hash mark [the E] is the needle 'resting'?

Could be a shorted gauge.

Do a test first

Do a simple test first. Hook up a test light between ground and the fuel sender wire. The light should come on and start flashing after 2 seconds. If YES the problem is in the sender. If NO the problem is in the gauge or the wire.

The Fuel gauge is not just a gauge. It has a Voltage Regulator build in that provides the working Voltage for the Fuel and Temp units.

If the temp gauge is working then you can rule out the vr in the fuel gauge. If both gauges are acting up then the vr is the likely suspect.
