From what I understand the factory-standard manual gearbox shipped with a 1HD-T was the H151f.

I think the R151f was shipped on non-turbo'd engines.

So ... if I can't find an H151f can I get away with an R151f on a 1HD-T in an FJ40 that's mainly on-road with occasional forrestry-tracks? Or is the turbo likely to splinter the gearbox?

1hdt

have you seen any posts swapping a 1hdt into a 40?

cannot find any detailed info although I have seen some mention of being able to mate the 1hdt and h55--if so will it go in a 40 or with another trans/xfer case combo?

oops - sorry - slight typo: this combination would be going into an fZj40 - although I guess that with this engine it would actually be an HZj40? ;o)

But the question I'm after an answer for is: will that combination of gearbox and engine work reliably. Or am I on a path to a right royal PITA?

thanks - have taken your advice and posted in the diesel-tech section.

I should add that with this I would be looking to use an 80 series chassis and chop it to fit the FJ40 body on. Which 'might' (or might not) negate the challenges with the gearbox being too long?

The engine I would be using would be either a 1HD-T or (if I can get my hands on one) a 1HD-FTE.

Cheers,

David

the tranny will hold up if you don't drive like a fool. the length is the issue though....maybe you could have the person in the back seat shift. i have 3 sitting in my shop if you need some measurements ...

I have an r151 behind my turbo 1HZ, puts out the same or more power than the HDT. I rebuilt the gearbox and transfer because of the previous use of many kms. I used a better clutch than stock (4Terrain). You'd have to use the 1HZ flywheel and clutch as the 1hdt flywheel is larger and has a larger clutch.

I have a HZJ40. The 1HZ came mated with an H151. The only way that you could use the H151/R151 would be (1) to cut the cross member and re-position it between the frame rails and then (2) re-cut the floor to allow for the new shifter position and seal up the original holes in the floor for the shifters and either have someone in the back seat shift everything for you or fab up some kind of L shaped shift lever that would allow you to sit in the drivers seat and shift with transmission and transfer case sitting just behind your seat. Many folks would say that all of these amount to a royal PITA.

Good luck
