Ok. I'm changing out my gas tank and found this mess o' stuff. What is it? And do I need to change out either of these filter looking things (flat one and a round one) while I'm at it? Should I change out the hoses?

keep it all - clean it all up and put it back the way you found it- that filter is a one way check valve - i wish i new that before i tossed mine.. that whole assembly is the fuel separator, essentially its where all of the gas vapors go so it doesn't stink up the cab - keep it or you'll be sorry you didn't!

That cheesy plastic Fuel Separator is (IIRC) about $43 at SOR. Be careful with it, it's just thin plastic.

You can get new check valves from the Dealer - I got one from C-Dan. You can also get generic one way check valves from a good auto parts store for about 1/4th the price.

I agree keep it all. If you have any leaks of cracks, you will know - you will smell it.

I'd also keep the same hoses - they look to be in good shape, and all that stuff is covered up by the metal shield....

I have been having troubles with fuel odor in my cab especially when the tank is near or at full. Yesterday I pulled the passenger seat and the metal covers off. I was also taken back at first by the 'seperator'. I replaced all of the hoses between the tank (which is new) and seperator even though they did not look too bad. The biggest thing I found was that someone use a 5/8 hose for the vent hose to the filler neck which is too big and was not sealing well even with clamps. I replaced the hose with 1/2 inch and now have a much tighter seal there. Time will tell if the fuel smell gets better.

My question as it relates to this thread is that I did not see the round white assembly on the single hose leading down through the body which I traced to the engine compartment. Is this the 'one way check valve'? If so, can simply missing this item cause fumes issues? I traced that metal pipe to the engine compartment where there is nothing hooked to it. Where does that normally hook to??

Extra credit: What does the seperator do exactly??

The PO pulled all of that from my rig. I just replaced my tank due to leaking. The check valve is missing but I do not get the fuel smell as bad as I used to. You may want to check your gas cap. I hear that can be problematic at times.

Nspctr1,

Where do you have all of those vent tubes routed on yours then?

Mine seems to be normal (excepte for missing check valve) except once the hose gets to the engine compartment from the seperator, it is not hooked to anything. Should this be hooked to something? Charcoal canister, etc??

When you say gas cap issues, do you mean where I read that some drill a small hole to relieve pressure in the tank? If so, would the vent hoses going through the seperator and out to nothing in the engine compartment not be a pressure release?

Thanks!
