What is the recommended engine oil weight for a 1978 2F engine??? I don't have the owners manual. The engine manual and Haynes manual don't mention weight, just grade (API, SAE, etc.)

10W40

I use 20w50 Castrol in all mine, they are all over 100k but I think I would in a new one.

The bearing clearances are generally larger on higher mileage engines. The heavier oil stays in the bearings longer than a thinner oil. Heavier oil also helps maintain oil pressure after the oil heats up.

I'm running 10w30 in my '76 FJ40 with 107K miles here in NJ. After an extended run on the highway the oil pressure drops noticably. When I run 10w40 or 20w50 this drop is much less. Now that it's warmed up it time for the heavier oil...

In the Phoenix Valley where you are, I would certainly consider 20-50 without question for the 2F. 15-40 winter, 20-50 summer for me in valley. I'll leave the brand of oil to the religious oil threads 8)

When I lived in TUS years ago I ran simply straight 30 weight, but it's tough to find nowadays.

That said, my 80 series seems to `choke' on 15-50 even in the summer, oil pressure on the not-so-accurate guage is too high for my liking and I'm a 10-30 on the 1FZ-FE engine, going to try the M1 5-40 though soon.

Keep in mind thicker oil is not always better, even for older engines. Oil is the medium that bearings dump their heat to so it must be thin enough to flow well past the bearings and carry away heat. Granted, keeping a film between metal and metal is important but too thick and the bearings will wear just as fast. Unless a serious amount of heat or RPM is being applied to an engine 10-40 (dinosaur oil) is good for most F/2F engines even if it means taking a 5 lb loss in pressure.

I have used Lucas Oil Stabilizer in one of my 4X4 rigs with great success. I seem to have less oil consumption for some reason and I have read really good things about it.

Good topic...i had this very question myself. I am running 10w30 Quakerstate and she seems to be running very well. But after reading some of these replies it sounds like i should be running thicker. She has 198,500 miles and runs very strong...should i be looking at thicker oil? Also, i am in TX and the winters are mild but the summers are brutally hot.

BigSur - the PO of my rig took it to the "LC Specialist" that's around here - and I'm not naming names, not on the board at least - and he told the PO to run 20/50. He'd rebuilt the head and said the rings were shot. Well, I'm running about 132 # in each cyl (which isn't bad for 204k) and the rings have outlived the crappy seals he put in the head...

Anyway, I used to run 20/50 but after getting to know the truck, I've found it does much better with 10/30 in the winter and 10/40 through the summer. (but then again, I put in a new radiator and run nice and cool, and I'm sure that makes a big dif)

Also, my truck is much happier with a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in it. I haven't tried the Lucas stuff, but MM helps with the crap valve seals, it runs quiet(er) - I keep a ton of it around.

10W40 Summer. 10W30 winter.

We don't have a winter here Dave, 10w40 all year.

I actually use 5W30 in winter, but that is because it gets to 30 below occasionally. You guys who don't get to drive in snow are losers.

Sometimes a big blizzard is all that it takes to show the difference between a cruiser and those other 4x4's

I used to think that too living in Colorado. But man, now that I've moved away, I can't say I miss the snow one once.

i run 10W40 all year in mine...

IMOP the snow is good to visit but i wouldnt want to live in it
