Hello Christo and others. Is the attached battery tray for two side-ways optimas available to purchase? Is there still a build file in H20 jet?

Bryan, sorry we have not made the tray for sale yet.

Given what's in that photo, it doesn't look like it'd be hard to replicate the design concept (if they aren't selling them).

What's so hard, a couple of bends and a few holes and 4 J hooks. mock up in foam or cardboard. Only info needed is battery dimensions.

Interesting orientation. Can't say I particularly like it as it puts the terminals forward which may be a risk in frontal collision.

Any accident where the front end would crush/cave in would jack up any battery in that location.... the front end has crumple zones made to absorb frontal impacts

I think the implication was bodywork into terminals but I could be wrong?

Yes, risk of short if the terminals or wiring get bridged. Impacting a battery from the side, even if destroying the casing is different. It is less likely to short in a manner that would bring about enough current to start a fire. I'd wager fire together with an accident is a wee more dangerous proposition.

Having been to a lot of car accidents and dealt with the aftermath, I’d MUCH rather have my battery squished open, minor or major, than have the contacts pushed into any other metal parts by a potentially minor frontal accident. As it is if the battery loses its acid it suddenly stops being an energy source.

Crushed batteries leak acid but I haven’t seen one catch on fire by itself. But I’ve been to dozens of car fires caused by dodgy aftermarket stereo installs where a large gauge wire rubbed through to make contact and there was no fuse to break the circuit. Body pushed into terminals is a very good way to make a robust ignition source. My experience has been that hoods seem to crumple away from the top of the battery to avoid this seemingly on purpose.

So yeah, somewhere in the space between minor accident that doesn’t cause contact, and accident large enough to crush one or both batteries, there is the potential for a lot of extra drama. I’d just put the second battery on the passenger side, personally.
