Hi Guys,

I'm replacing my tires in the next few weeks so while I'm at it, I was thinking of re-spraying rims from the factory silver to black.
I was wondering if anyone has done the same and has photos of it as I'm not sold on black rim silver cruiser combo!!

Cheers, Evan

Mine were powder coated black matte. I've seen some people on here spray paint or plasti dip.

I just had 4 wheels powder coated at the local Les Scwab for $25 each in gray.

That is about the going rate from what i have seen. But don't forget you also have to have your tires unmounted, then remounted and balanced. Probably looking at about 100 bucks just for that.

Plasti-dip is a spray on rubbery material that can be removed by just pulling it off.

Im not a fan of it on wheels. It does not clean well, and once it gets dirty or muddy, it has a tendency to stain.

Spray painting wheels sucks too. I won't be doing that again.

These wheels are spray painted and imho its the best way to coat wheels. Cheap. Easy. Touch ups are cheap and easy too!

I've used plasti-dip on emblems and on rims on my old T4R. I think its a pretty cool way to change the look of your truck and protect your factory rims. And if you don't like it or get sick of it you can just peel it off. Plus it adds 35 hp...:grinpimp: I'm thinking of doing it to my LC rims this spring and will post pics.

What did you do to prep the wheels for spray paint? I am thinking of going down that road.

Sr Gringo, I see you are in the PNW....I didn't realize Schwab offered PC services. Is that something unique to the Schwab u went to? Did u have to have to do the prep work?

These wheels were actually bought from mud member paflytyer after he had painted them. Maybe he'll chime in on his process. Most of my friends who see the wheels ask about the finish on them because they came out so good. Matches RiverRock quite nicely.Paint used was Dupli color graphite wheel paint IIRC.

On my 80 I just sanded them down then sprayed them. Been holding up good so far. Not as pretty as powder coating but way easier to do and touch up.

Wait until the plastidip gods hear that paflyter used paint. This is serious.

It wasn't mine, but I might have glanced at it. Chuck Norris is liable to kick my jaw loose now. In any case, those wheels look SICK!

It's all in the prep. I used a wire cup brush on an electric drill, a Dremel for the tight spots, steel wool and a few coats of self etching primer. I only sanded once during priming because I wanted the wheels to have a rougher texture. There's a lot of hours in doing it right. I kinda wish I would have kept them.... but they went to a good home.

Regarding Les Scwab the powder coating is a companywide service. They sandblast the wheels and powder coat for $25 each. My wheels were new but they charge the same price for rusted wheels, etc. The guy I spoke to was negotiable...he started out at $40. These wheels are for winter snow tires.

Spray painted rims rule.

Wow Nick, what caused all of those dents? Just wheeling scars?
