looking for a US LX470 key ** SOLVED **

My 2006 LX470 came with only one key. Luckily it's a master key so I will be able to program it (I think) using some ridiculous procedure.

I have been searching for a spare key, but the local Canadian Lexus dealer is not very helpful because my vehicle is imported from the US.

I could contact a US dealership and ask if they could make me a key using my VIN but they are also reluctant to help some foreigner they don't know.

So I am thinking some fellow mudder would be able to help me out. Maybe someone could order a key at their dealer based on my VIN and then ship it to me. I am not sure what it will cost, but I have PayPal so I am sure we can figure that out.

Do you want a remote key or a non-remote key?

There is a pretty good thread on 100 series keys that has part numbers and such.

Sent from my iPhone using IH8MUD

I'd prefer a remote key.

I have read pretty much all key related threads. Getting a key without the remote isn't a big problem, they sell them on eBay, but getting it cut might be. That's why I thought it might be wise to go through a US dealer. If they have the VIN, they can order a key with a remote and cut it for me.
And then I can try and program it by locking and unlocking my doors 5 times etc.. etc.. etc.. hoping that I don't get all confused. I will probably use a helper to read the instructions.

So you are facing a couple problems I can see...

  • Getting the key cut: Does the US and Canada ignitions have the same key pattern? In other words can a Canada dealer cut a US key. If so with the help of a fellow mudder you could source the key in the US, ship to Canada and have your local dealer simply cut it. The next issue you face is if the key must be cut in the US most dealers require you come in person with proof of ownership before they will cut anything. In other words I can not take your new key and VIN to my local dealer and ask them to cut it on your behalf.

  • Getting the immobilizer programmed: The instructions you linked are for programming the key FOB to the keyless entry. However that does not program the ECU immobilizer. To my knowledge the only way this can be done is by the dealer and there special service computer. Here lies a potential issue, is the service computer at the Canada dealers compatible with your US vehicle's ECU and can program the keys?

Have you considered a short trip across the border to address these issues at a US dealer?

Good points Anthony, I think the US and Canadian keys are the same, but I am not sure.
And then there is the immobiliser, I didn't think of that. I can't imagine Lexus having special Canadian spec service computers because the market is relatively small, but then again, I don't know.

Maybe there are some Canadian mudders who have dealt with the same problem.

Making a spare key for my FJ40 was a lot easier, that's for sure.

Have you spoken to Canadian Lexus dealers and asked if they will cut new keys with a US VIN number? If not I think you are making a drive across the border to get this done...

Too bad you didn't buy a LC, the LC keys are nothing special and any locksmith can cut keys. The Lexus uses a special laser cut that only the Lexus dealer can do to my knowledge.

You may want to try contacting a US dealer directly yourself, since dealers typically require proof of ownership prior to making the duplicate.

Try contacting usernames "Lowe Toyota" or Cdan. I know from other threads that Lowe is able to ship to Canada. They are both dealers that are active here on MUD and should be able to help you out.

Yes, but the weren't to eager to help me. I don't do my service there, so that doesn't help. They said to contact someone else at the dealer, but no luck so far. They don't seem interested to help me out.
I also contacted my Toyota dealer (I also have an FJ Cruiser and FJ40). They have a great service but can't help me with my LX.

You might be right. I have heard good things about Cdan. I searched his username, but nothing pops up. I will try Lowe too.

 cruiserdan, I knew that, thanks. I sometimes misplace my brain.

Lexus uses keys with an internal laser cut. Toyota dealers are not set up for that.

I have sort of the same problem. Only I live in Arkansas...which might as well be Canada when it comes Lexus. Mine only came with one key and it broke right where the metal meets the plastic. Nobody local can cut a new key either. The local Toyota dealership wants over $300 for ONE key!!! Has anybody ever used the online key cutters?

I recently bought my LX, it came with one broken key and one key with a dead battery. Lexus Tacoma replaced the broken key body and recut the key for 66.00 USD. This technique requires the reuse of the remote in the existing key.

The quote for a complete key was 240.00 they needed to see photo ID and the registration.

Do you have a LC or LX? LC any locksmith can cut the keys, LX is a special inside laser cut that only a factory Lexus dealer can perform.

Buy the key from one of the online dealerships that supports MUD, and for a substantial discount. Then have the local dealer cut it. They should cut for free, but at most will charge you < $20.

If only the shell is broken, and the remote still functions (unlocks doors, disables immobilizer) then get a new shell off eBay for $3.

There's an OE Lexus blank shell...
