TPS setup with Scangauge?

All,
I'm about to put a TPS on our 99 after P0120 popped up about 3 times since August. I was reading a thread about the published need to use the Toy Scan tool to check adjustment and also about just installing it about as the old one was installed.

I got to thinking that the Scangauge will report TPS %. Has anyone tried reading this value at idle with the old sensor and then setting the new one with the scangauge to the same value? Results?

Ok I'll answer my own question,

Turns out you can use the ScanGauge to set up the TPS, our LC Idled at TPS=16 and WOT was TPS=80.
On the new TPS the idle adjustment range available for me was 9-18. The '04 (wrong year) FSM lists 10-24 Idle and 64-96 Wide Open.

I simply adjusted the new TPS as everyone suggests; "so it matches the old" and it landed at 16 as well.
The ScanGauge seemed very sensitive to the TPS true position.

Also worth noting, when in 'Limp' mode the TPS reading is 16 at any position other than on the floor and then it locks at 25 as you lurch forward in slow mode.

64-90 seems like a wide range for WOT. Is there a significant power difference by targeting the upper end of that range? Can you do that independent of the idle setting? Mine is at 80 right now.

I don't know for sure but I assume the values here are insignificant, the sensor numbers are just that, numbers input to the computer. The system should learn that the highest number from the TPS = WOT and then whenever it sees that number it behaves in WOT modes. Similarly it will learn the lowest value correlates to a zero throttle input. Were just trying to ensure that the sensor is in it's useful range over the full throw of the actual throttle butterfly.
Another use for the numbers is that the computer probably uses the specified limit value ranges to detect error conditions when comparing sensor inputs.


My short answer would be no, probably no gains to be had by tweaking it if it's already in spec.
