Selling my 1980 HJ47 Troopy. I'm moving back to Hawaii and I can't let it die there.
$16,000 OBO, Not looking for trades just cash
3 owners - Original owner used it as his work rig in South Australia before the second owner imported it to California when it was 25yrs old. Then I bought it last February as a dream come true. 2nd owner had driven it very little.
About the rig:
1980 Late year 11/80
2H Diesel Engine with 4 speed (low 1st gear)
295,### KM
Air conditioning! (A/C clutch spins holds R12 but there is something wrong with the wiring).
Runs very well, warm up the glow plugs then it fires right up every time, even after sitting for a week.
Sitting on 16" Split rims with 235/85 BFG All Terrain Plus Tires (this tire used on the VW Toureg for Dakar and Baja 500) Lots of tread 95% all around, no spare but the rim is there.
Work I've done:
Changed all Fluids and filters 15w40 Shell Rotella T Oil, Sta Lube in all Diffs and Tranny, Toyota Red in Radiator (after an epic flushing session with distilled water).
I sanded and prepped the inside of the tub and sprayed a rust inhibitor coat (there was no rust really just flashing a bit through the original paint) Then covered with black herculiner followed by grey durabak.
Pulled the top and sides to do this, all seals and weatherstripping good, gave them all a good soak in a simple green solution, followed by a coating of 303 rubbed in before re-installing. Layed in FatMat on the roof top (planned to put headliner in but had been given wrong one by PO and I didn't want to wait to order a new one before getting the troopy back together.
Replaced all mounting hardware with Stainless Steel on re-install. CCOT weatherstripping on all doors (ambulance doors not bad, front doors need adjusting to fully seal, with SOR window felts.
Hella lights - plus HID kit = really bright and awesome.
Other than basic upkeep I've had to do very little. Every tank I've been putting in Diesel Klean injector lube. I was getting 16mpg for a while now lately I'm getting 18mpg no matter what I do driving wise, mostly in town as you'll find freeway driving is a joke (but still enjoyable as you wave everyone past you) Cruises nicely at 55mph, can go more but really if you go too fast people won't see how awesome the truck is!
Has really great road manners ( i think the longer wheel base helps). I wouldn't hesitate to drive it great distances right now.
Cool Bits:
Lots of parts, All emblems for rear quarters. Aftermarket door panels (originals still there and looking fine). I have a oil filter bracket from a newer 2H (no centrifugal filter) that I have been wanting to install. Overhead console I got from another mud member that I've been reworking before installing, plus 3.5 inch Polk speakers to go there. Pair of 5"x7" and 5" Alpine S-Type speakers that I have been dreaming of installing (no head unit yet though). Original speaker slot is uncut but there is no unit. Lots of left over ss hardware and bits and pieces.
Other bits, Alloy Bull Bar (I'm a fan, but others aren't), New bull bar from Body Armor - currently mounted, also you get a rear bumper with swing out tire carrier that I haven't gotten around to putting on either.
All the bench seats are in the back, upholstery is good. Front bench seats are good too, but have rips in upholstery.
The exoskeleton you see in the first pictures are not there anymore, there is a set of proper racks now 4 total.
Not so cool bits:
Rust - yes there is rust. The quarter panels have the evil diamond plating so - there's probably rust there. Along the top of the rear wheel wells a spot on the cowl before the windshield, and the bottom of the front bib.
That about sums it up - when I remember more I'll post it up. More pictures to follow soon and if you have specifics let me know - come take her for a test drive!
