Hello from the northwoods! I'll be moving to Memphis, TN in about a month or so, and was told that this is where Land Cruiser people from Memphis hang out. My company is relocating me, so I'll be in Memphis until sometime in summer 2011 when they feel like moving me to yet another place. So, I figure it'd be a great time to connect with other Land Cruiser owners in the area. I've got a 1974 FJ40 that I restored, and a 1970 FJ55 on my to-do list that is in pieces. Both are back in my family's pole barn in Michigan. The FJ40 is wintering there, but got a good deal of miles on it around Wisconsin this past summer.

I'm not sure when I'm moving yet (November?), but if anyone can recommend a good apartment complex or place to live in the Memphis area, I'm all ears. And good BBQ joints - always looking for good BBQ!! I look forward to meeting you, hanging out, and if you have room, let me ride along on trail rides. I can pay my hitchhiking fee by cash, check, cigars, beer, whiskey, food, etc. (I usually have most of those with me when out on adventures!)

Happy trails:steer:

Welcome to Memphis. I have lived there for 14 years
And have learned a few things. If your single live downtown
And don't eat at the rendezvous, except for one time.

I am out of town on family vacation with sketchy Internet.
Give you more info later.

Mike

CottonLand has some good members up in Memphis. And some others.

I'm sure the folks from up there will chime in soon with answers to your questions.

In the meantime let me say:

WELCOME!

Welcome

Welcome to the South.

Brian,

email me at johnbomar at gmail dot com and I will try to point you to a safe part of town.

Mike hit it right on the head on rendezvous go once enjoy the place since the food has went downhill for the last 10 or so years.

You should have a good time for the short time your in town.

May will be the best month to be in town.

Welcome! Are you bringing both trucks or just the 40?

Brian -

Welcome and we will look forward to meeting you. I have lived in Memphis for the last 10 - 15 years...with a few breaks thrown in there. My wife and I live downtown and downtown is the place to live. Don't let anyone tell you differently...it is the safest place in Memphis...has the best food...most to do...and is a great environment. In fact, depending upon when you move here...I may have my condo available for rent. None the less, give me a heads up when you come into town and Mike, myself, and any other Memphis Land Cruiser folks will take care of you.

Mark, thanks for the info. I may just take you up on that, if it's available. I still don't know when I'll be moving down, company seems to have forgotten about me (which is ok, I really like it where I'm at right now.) I am excited to move down, wheel with you guys a bit (55 is in 16,000 pieces so that stays home, and I think my 40 will be sitting for quite a while until I have a good spot to store it and work on it) and generally hang out. What the heck is Orange Mound?

I've already had the pleasure of seeing parts of Orange Mound.

That's a mistake I won't make again.

Welcome. It is good to have a few Yankees get exposed to the Deep South.

You will go home with a new appreciation for where you were raised :D

You hate MS don't you Nolen?

Just messing with you about Orange Mound... it's the roughest neighborhood in TN. Look in the "memphis baby" thread towards the bottom of the clc page and watch the "memphis beer murder" youtoobs clip and you will have an idea about orange mound. It would all depend on where you are going to be working as to where I'd recommend looking for a place to live... I'd hate to tell you to look at mud island and find out you are working in collierville or something. I'd suggest bringing a gun regardless.

what's to hate on that plantation he lives on?

He is the Rhett Butler of Cottonland...
