Roof rack mounting

I'm getting a Megawarrior and wanted to see what you guys thought about the mounting options. Currently, I have a factory rack/crossbars, but I've also got Yakima crossbars mounted to the factory rails. Does it make any difference how I mount this?

I would prefer to mount it directly to the factory rails, as it will be better for garage clearance. (as it will sit lower). I'm going to be carrying luggage, mostly. So maybe 150lbs or so (it will be for 7 people). Nothing really heavy.

Thanks for any input.

EDIT: Change of mind. Will be going "DIY". See below.

Mine is mounted to the factory crossbars and work fine, but i'm sure the Yakima cross bars would be much more stable. The factory crossbars seem to flex alot, but i haven't had any problems. I believe the max capacity for both the Megawarrior and factory crossbars is 150lbs, so I always make sure I don't go over. I just wish I spent the extra money and bought a proper roof rack.

I would use the Yakima cross bars. I bent my factory ones with my basket case. The Load Warrior gives even more opportunity to overload.

Thanks, guys. I will use the Yakima cross bars. I guess I will be sporting two Yakima fairings like a moving billboard. :D

no-pistons - I would like to get a Frontrunner slim rack, but I can't justify spending $1,000 on a rack right now. I may sell the Yakima set up next year and get one at that time, though.

mine is on the factory cross bars, no issues.

Hey guys, new development. I Was doing more research and happened on an article on DIY rack called j-moose rack, (seen here: http://www.wildyoats.com/the_j-rack.htm) which utilizes an atv ramp. It does involve some fab work, but since I am no good in that arena, I decide to go a little ghetto fab. I will simply mount it directly onto my Yakima bars. Not sure how I will fasten it on there, but it should work beautifully. Here is the "rack" I'm going to buy.

ATV Super Lite Bi-Fold Loading Ramps, Ramps & Tie-Downs, ATV & UTV Accessories, Auto & ATV : Cabela's

Any suggestions on fastening this to the Yakima round bars?

I have the megawarrior - i've always used yakima products - my audi has full racks, for skiis, snowboards, bikes, tube etc.. the crusier has the rear hitch mount 5 bike .. they are all good but i regret buying the megawarrior.. the size is great, its light; but therein lies the problem.. its strength. i have it attached to the factory roof rails - they seem to bounce and flex quite a bit.. i have not exceeded the 150 lbs limit - but think about it.. i have a 33 inch bfg at up there, a high lift and a shovel/axe. there is room for more, but skeptical of the wieght. IF anything broke while its bouncing up and down trail forging, that hi lift would severely damage the windows and side of the truck. I also can't sleep up top with some of the ARB camping set ups.. another limitation. so, while the product does what it says, it doesn't seem like a sturdy system for what the cruiser was born to do. i think this is a soccer mom setup for putting diapers and soccer balls up top.
i am going to apologize to my cruiser now and try to make up.

Jordan,

I have heard of someone on here using a double set of Yakima cross bars and being able to use a roof top tent with the OEM side rails. Although I have not seen this in person, I have often wondered about this approach, as we typically CAN exceed the 150llb limit if we try to take just the 100. Lately, we have been taking both the 100 and the 80, so we have been limiting roof top stuff to sleeping bags, tents and coats. No water or coolers.

I have seen that also but I am not sure I would take that route after having disassembled the factory roof rack in order to remove the crossbars. There is one smallish screw holding the main forward to aft member to it's plastic foot mounting. Once this one screw is removed the foot mount pops right out and that is how I slid my crossbars out of the assembly. So for my entire setup (factory rack w/no crossbars and Yakima RailGrabs w/50" crossbars) there are 4 small screws that are what I believe to be a weak link, holding it all together.

Ok, so bought some of the above-mentioned ramps at Cabelas for $99.99. I am going to cut the hinges and bolt or weld them together. The feet may stay, though, just in case I need to load a 4wheeler.

Here is the ramp mocked up on the Yakima crossbars. Eventually, I'd like to get rid of the crossbars and the stock rack and go with some custom mounting legs.
