I've talked to Vintage and others in the US about an AC system for the RHD Landcruiser. They laugh. So far, no luck in where to source a system that has all of the holes and knobs in the right place.

I'm willing to remove the stock heater box, so optimally, the passenger side of the box has coolent connections. The driver's side has the hot water connections, and the controls are within the reach of the driver, or are movable.

Help. I know it must exist as a new system, but I can't find where it's hiding.

Perhaps someone down under could point me in the right direction?
Thanks

look for a yokohama 747 under-dash a/c unit. It can fit as a direct replacement for oem aircon on these models. It doesn't alter the heater, but the duct from the blower to the heater core is different for aircon-equipped models. Probably the same unit for lhd or rhd, as the controls are on a separate panel. I have it in my troopy and it works great. It was already installed when I imported it, so don't know if you can source them in the states. HJ47 just replaced his factory aircon in his fj40 lx with the same and said it is much better than the stock one.

Thanks David. Josh passed along the name Yokohama to me a few weeks ago. My google searching and queries with AC guys in the US didn't turn up anything that I could use. There is probably a shop in Brisbane or Sydney that has a full kit that will work perfectly, but it's still just out of my reach. If you have any other keywords or numbers from your system that I could use for my search I would appreciate it!

Thanks! I still don't have a handle on a full system that I can purchase, but I will keep your bracket in mind if it looks like a match. I may be posted in the wrong classifieds forum with this. I thought that I might get a quick hit from someone that had done a recent installation. I would hate to do a kludgey install if the right box is available somewhere. Thanks again.

Reaching out once more to see if anyone has done a recent RHD AC installation... CCOT seems to be the top contender so far as their kit retains the stock heater, but they don't actually have a RHD diesel kit. I would have to fab the compressor bracket, come up with a new belt routing, and make other adjustments only as I find them.

Anyone else out there do something recently with an AC system on a 2H?

working on a RHD AC system

I appreciate the problem you are having. I am in the same boat. I am looking to replace the AC in my 1983 RHD FJ45 with no luck. I work with a guy who has done hundreds of FJ restorations and he and I are at a standstill on this. If I find anything that looks promising I will let you know

I wondered where that rig ended up this time around. It's been sold a lot since it landed here. How is it doing? I tried to buy it from the AU owner, but pulled the trigger a day late and a dealer down the road got it. I have one now, but would be nice to have the body work done like yours.

With two of you looking, maybe HJ47 will be willing to ship a couple Yoko 747s across the pond for you? Mine works great, but I need a new compressor now.

I'm happy to do a group ship. I also just saw an add by a Cruiser restoration outfit in Qld. showing an aircon kit for RHD. Here is their web address:

Landcruiser Parts and Restoration

I don't know anything about them, but they sell a lot of American Cruiser stuff to the Aussies.

I don't reckon I have that yellow pop top on the Registry. The link is in my signature if dmacmd wants to add it. For what it's worth, I spoke with the seller here in Oz, and he was a nice bloke. He was a Kiwi and the rig had been in his family for some time (I think it was his Uncle's rig originally). He did the body work himself with plans to keep it for the long term. I seem to recall that he was a panel beater by trade (body man). My feeling is that it will be a good rig.

Cheers,

Josh

Message sent to "Landcruiser Parts and Restoration" asking for details on the AC. It looks like they have two different kits installed, both on V8 conversions. Fingers are crossed for a 2H, stock-heater-saving kit.

My frame off continues...final paint in the tub today.
Toyota 532 of course!

Thanks Josh!

Whoops. I've already pulled a trigger of sorts, in that I'm creating a new system from individual part components. Since I couldn't find anyone that had a reasonable kit, I asked my mechanic to see what we could build on our own. He has found what we need. So...there will be some modifications, but in the end I'll end up retaining the stock heater in the stock location with a modified fresh air duct from the stock blower fan to the heater box and defrost duct. The in-cabin AC blower will be located only on the passenger side under the glove box. It's in process right now. Mods to the compressor bracket are required, and custom hose lengths will be required as well.

Fingers crossed, I think it's going to fit my needs. I'll be happy to share part vendors, pics, numbers etc... I'll also be ready to give a straight up opinion on what I have and how well it works. Maybe two weeks and I'll be able to try it out and let you know.

One more thing. I did get into contact with the group that Josh found near Brisbane. I didn't get a warm feeling regarding the experience level and kit completeness with 2H systems. They may be fine and wonderful, but I think I would only use them if me, the rig, and they were all in the same place at the same time. The ducting they have in their kit (as seen via .pdf) also looks a little bulky, as it sits in front of the lower dash across the whole cabin. Too much for me.
