***** BOUGHT AN FJ62 LAST NIGHT****
***** THANKS*****

Newb here. Been following IH8MUD for a while but only recently signed up for the forums. Been coveting a 60 series wagon since the early 90s.

I live right across the GG bridge from SF and am trying to find a clean FJ62. Like a lot of folks, I'm looking for a rust-free rig that has ideally spent all of its life in CA or the southwest. Max budget is ~ $12K for the right vehicle. (Somewhere above a fine-running but cosmetically-challenged vehicle, and below a TLC or Cool Cruisers restoration.)

I am not - nor will I ever be - a hardcore offroader. If you see me on slickrock in Moab, I'll most likely be on my mountain bike! I'm really looking for a camping/expedition-type rig to be able to haul my family around CA (and beyond?). Logging highway miles to get places, and offroad miles once we're there. I'm also an avid flyfisherman, and will use this to tow my drift boat around Northern California and OR. Again, once I'm there, accessing certain rivers often requires 4WD to get to the put in.

Since we'll probably cover a lot of highway miles - I've settled on the FJ62. (I know that there's more to it than this, but basically, I'm ok with trading the square headlights for fuel injection and better top-end speed.)

Been monitoring Craigslist and eBay - but figured I'd introduce myself, and see if the community has suggestions. Thanks.

That's plenty of budget for a very nice FJ62. Having driven a lot of Cruisers and currently owning 4 of them including an FJ62, I feel I can say that an 80 is a better choice for the uses you describe. Your budget is enough for that too, and as a bonus you'll get better power and more towing capability.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 60 and 62 but an 80 is superior in nearly all ways. 93-97 80 series can eat up freeway miles far better, tows better, gets the same or better fuel economy, and is far more comfortable while doing it.

Even nice FJ62s are $2-5000. For the money you are talking hold out for a really nice one. My FJ62 is the perfect truck for you (120k, not a spec of rust, all original) but it isn't for sale. It was less than $3k at the peak of the fuel price spike last year. Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the feedback. You're right - that an FJ80 functionally may make the most sense. But...

I should have been more clear about a few things:

  • I may have over-estimated the importance of highway speed. Let me re-phrase - if choosing between an FJ60 and an FJ62, I'm leaning towards the FJ62 because of the fuel injection and ability to go faster on the highway
  • We have a 2000 4Runner that can get us places fast, but it's my wife's daily driver - loaded with kids car seats, strollers, etc. I'd like a vehicle that I can use on weekend trips as well
  • By no means do I want to spend $12K! I'd much rather spend significantly less, but don't want to miss opportunities because I put my max budget too low
  • And finally, call me shallow, but there's something about the body style of the 60 series wagons that speaks to me!

'Nuf said. Whoever said this hobby had any sanity to it anyway. You will find the rig you want if you are patient. Watch the classifieds, join your local Land Cruiser Association and find a buddy to help you look and check out the ones you find. There are still some really nice fj62s around.
