Winter is taking it's toll.... I am desperate for a drivers door latch mechanism. The little star roller on the door is almost shot. Only holds shut every third time or so. 72 pig.

Please, please someone have one.....PM me.

Is the star itself shot, or has the housing warbled out around it? If it's warbled out, it can be fixed. Takes a little work, but it can be done.

Thanks. It seems that the star is pretty loose and moves around within the outer housing... and the housing around it is slightly moveable. How does one fix that? I have not taken it out yet since it still works mostly... and it is still quite cold here.

You mean the whole mechanism....? PM on it's way.

Thanks!!!

Pics of the latch. The star is shot... moves around in the housing too much to latch properly. :pig:

if you've got a welder and some time, and can't find a replacement, it can be fixed

What is broken or worn out that can be fixed with a welder? It seems like the star is so loose that it slops around. Is it broken inside? I have not pulled the part yet to investigate. I thought I just had to get a new one on this.

Thanks Buddy! I appreciate your effort.

Cool, now we're talkin!

It's a little better with the warm weather, but, she's running on time fumes.

welder

I think the only reason that the star moves around is because the metal housing has been worn down. Mine was the same way. I took it to a welder that is amazing. He cut off the outside of the housing and welded an new one on, having punched a hole for the star. He used a bit thicker gauge steel and it is sweet now. Amazingly tight, with no slop at all. I have compared it to the ones that are "okay" in the rear doors and they just don't compare.

xtiaan, got a pic of the finished job? I am interested to see what it looks like.

Cool idea. I think JackA has me set up for the moment... but there are three more on the old oinker that could go too. Would like to see the photos... shoulda made this a thread.

Thanks all...

welding

This is the fixed door latch. It is thicker gage metal than the original-compare the one on the letf to the one on the right. It is amazingly snug. Smooth weld on the outside edge. No play at all when the star wheel spins.
